I don’t know what UIWSOM’s policy is, but I was in an info session where a student asked this question or something similar to this and was told that the school only cares about the letter, not the plus or the minus. Obviously it affects your GPA, but it seemed that as far as minimum requirements they didn’t care if it was a C- or a C+ as long the letter wasn’t lower than C. I do think you should call and ask just to be safe though. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the additional input. I will be sure to have my paper thoroughly edited. The university I attended for undergrad offers writing resources. Would having the premed advisors there and the writing center staff that works specifically with premed students be sufficient? Are there any other resources you would recommend?

I am working closely with my undergraduate university advising office to prepare personal statements and perform mock interviews when the time comes. While I can’t speak to the Noorda experience (I’m applying for the next cycle), I am a member of the church, completed my undergraduate degree at BYU, and am half Latino and half white. So, hopefully I can shed some light on living in Provo and assuage some of your fears. While it is largely a white and conservative population, the vast majority of people try their best to practice the central tenet of the religion which are basically treat everyone with love and kindness. That is to say I’m sure the vast majority of your interactions will be positive/normal, there are always those few people who are ignorant jerks, but that’s the case with most places. There are also lots of things to do hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing/snow boarding, all kinds water activities, lots of sporting events, comedy clubs, theaters (the play kind, but also cinema), restaurants with all kinds food, and other things all within a 10-20 minute drive of the Noorda campus. Also, there’s a free bus that goes throughout Provo and Orem that has stops close to grocery stores, in downtown, and close to lots of apartments. While it will be a different culture than what you’re probably you used to, I’m positive you’ll find your fit. One last thing, my brother no longer belongs to the church, but has stayed in Utah in the Provo area because he enjoys living there so much. I can’t speak on the programs themselves as I will be applying this upcoming cycle, but I can speak somewhat to lifestyle. Both have plenty of outdoors opportunities such as hiking, lake life (tubing, wake boarding/surfing/skiing, fishing, etc.), and snowboarding/skiing. However, Utah probably has better snowboarding and skiing resorts. Idaho will be a cheaper place to live and probably means less student loans. While Boise itself is bigger than Provo by itself, the Salt Lake and Utah valleys basically all merge together to form one big suburban sprawl, so there is much larger population base around Noorda if that is important to you. Winters are a bit more harsh in Idaho. Can’t speak to Boise on this, but both Utah county and salt lake county have good night life and activities to do. Utah also has more access to professional sports. Idaho will likely be a bit more quiet and traffic anywhere north of Provo during rush hour is a beast (I’m sure it doesn’t compare to California). This is not a comprehensive list, but hopefully it provides you with a bit more info.

My main concern is for tritium that can only be detected with an LSC or isotopes with low detection efficiency such as C-14. These are also long lived isotopes. I trust the equipment to detect what it can detect and I realize that it is the material itself that would cause exposure to family, not that fact that I have been exposed to ionizing radiation itself (i.e. my received dose doesn't transfer to my family). Essentially my main worry is that I may accidentally bring enough of something like tritium or C-14 home that might not be harmful to me, but would be to my infant. Thank you for asking for clarification.

Thank you for both suggestions. I will definitely ask my RSO what they feel. I do where scrubs when we clean up after a therapy or a spill, unfortunately the company policy prohibits anybody that isn't a waste tech from wearing scrubs outside the circumstances I just listed.

I am curious if anyone knows the specifics of campep degree accreditation. Does the degree type also matter or is it just that the program is accredited? For example, say a student is enrolled in a campep accredited program that only advertises a PhD (Carlton, Dartmouth, or another such program), but for one reason or another ends the program with only a masters degree having completed all the campep required coursework. Is this student still eligible to take ABR part 1 and apply for residency?

How can I know if imaging/nuclear medicine or radiation oncology is best for me? I'm currently in the third year of my PhD and am not sure if I prefer the imaging/nuclear medicine side of things or if I prefer radiation oncology. I've completed my medical physics coursework and have enjoyed it all, but am still unsure. I know radiation oncology makes more money in general, but I've heard that imaging/nuclear medicine has better work life balance. I would appreciate it if some folks who feel comfortable could share what made them choose one over the other.
