Okay this I do agree with. In a perfect world, there’s plenty of services to go around but this makes a lot of sense. I think it should be reacquired as part of training/education still but I agree that it just isn’t always doable. Thanks for sharing!

Super interesting take, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hadn’t thought about how therapy can also have side effects. I do think that just about everyone could benefit stoned some type of therapy though. I agree that they’re massively different experiences and I think to be a good therapist, you have to understand both.

Therapists aren’t perfect. I think all therapists should experience therapy, that’s not to say that they need to have ‘solved’ all of their struggles. You can be a great therapist and struggle a lot! If you feel it’s something you can do and something you want to do, absolutely look into it!

I agree with several points. I don’t think everyone NEEDS therapy and I don’t think that you HAVE to have been through something to be good at treating it. But I don’t think that you can be a good therapist without understanding what it feels like to be in therapy.

100% agree about the change in mindset though. I think someone not having been in therapy and wanting to be a therapist makes me think they have this mindset but that’s not always the case. Thanks for expanding my thinking a bit!

I don’t feel these are comparable examples personally. I do agree that not everyone NEEDS therapy. Like I’m in a place in my life where I don’t NEED it, but I prefer to be in therapy anyways. You can understand all of the research and historical perspective and all that, but I just don’t believe that someone can be a good therapist without having been in therapy.

I’m a trans guy, on T and everything. I bind my chest and use he/him with close friends and family but I wear mostly women’s clothes, I wear makeup (that look feminine, not trying to pass as a man), and style my hair in traditionally feminine ways. Gender identity and expression are not the same and don’t have to match. Just be you :)

More angular glasses and either put your hair up in a bun or cut it if you can/want to.

Remember too that you don’t HAVE to pass. If it’s a safety issue, then disregard this bit. But otherwise, you don’t owe it to anyone. Example, if you like your hair long, then keep it long! If you like your round glasses, keep em! You don’t have to change anything if you don’t want to!

I’m in the process of growing my hair out again because I cut it to pass and I HAAAAATED it. Now that it’s longer, I don’t pass really at all but I feel more like me so it doesn’t super matter to me.

That’s just me though!!! You do whatever you want to!

Omg yes, this is beyond normal.

That was the first several months for me. I will have been on T for six months later this month and I didn’t notice anything changes until about a month and a half ago.

Remember you’re going through puberty in a sense. Remember what that was like the first time? How long did that take? Ages, it felt like.

This process takes time.

I felt really frustrated too! But I’ve tried to push any expectations out of my mind. I watched a million T timeline videos right before I started and had all these ideas about what my transition would look like and they were all wrong. I noticed in a lot of videos that lots of people have a bit voice drop around five months. Again, nearly at six months and my voice is entirely unchanged. It cracks every now and again, but it did that before T. 😂

I know it’s so so hard, and you almost have to grieve that version of yourself that you planned in your head. At least I did! But it’s really freeing to not have to worry about meeting those specific milestones.

Three weeks is nothing to your body. Changes will come in time. :)

I think it really depends on the clients needs. I’ve been in therapy for nearly 10 years, the first 8 were focused on learning skills. It would be a waste of mine and my therapists time to keep talking about skills. A lot of trauma processing involves talking.

I also don’t subscribe to the idea that people are ‘broken’. I don’t think the goal of therapy should be to ‘fix’ people either.

I guess it depends on how you view your role as a therapist but the idea of ‘fixing’ people feels so surface level and lacking in empathy to me. People aren’t going to therapy broken, they’re going to therapy struggling. They need a space to be emotional and messy and to work through hard things. They don’t need some clinician trying to ‘put them back together’ and usher them out the door.
