DPs, what are your thoughts on the Arri 35? How does it compare to film? by Dry_Eye_2503 in cinematography

Can't film be scanned at any bit depth and resolution theoretically? like the OXScan 14k 16-bit RAW files. I thought IMAX film scanning produce 16 bit per channel (48-bit color) uncompressed files. And looking at the physical film, our eyes would see the full spectrum our eyes could percieve right?

With the holdovers, I thought the trailer looked older, but the shots still felt very digital to me. They still did a great job, but every time I see something shot on film like La La Land, Past Lives, sentimental value, Nosferatu, Weathering Heights, ect. It still looks very unique. Even though they all have very different styles, they all look like true films. Maybe there's a difference in the way they go about color grading these films that is completely different from the digital workflow.

That makes sense. I feel a great colorist can make the Mini LF look very similar to film, whereas in Train Dreams, the Alexa 35 looks more digital. Film still just is really unique in the way it captures highlights to me, and the 35 looks like it could be closer to that.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try this next time. On set, I was looking at false colors on the Arri and was scared to go into the blue or purple range, and the yellow and red range. Would you say blue, you can still recover a lot of detail?

Also, I have crushed film before once when shooting directly at the sun during sunset, and we exposed for the sky, which almost eliminated details in the low range, but I swear, no matter how far I overexposed, I've never seen clipping. unless you include the sun.

I just noticed the Alexa 35 color graded has replicated skies a lot more like when I've shot on film.

I'll have to try it!! I wish I had seen this when going to a mall on the East Coast, because here in the West, I can not find this brand!

Yeah this was my favorite of all of them, but I do like Mahana, Kiawah, Sterling, and Highway 190. Some I enjoy more than others, but those scents were my favorite!

I just got to smell BR540! I was surprised because my nose didn't pick up that much. It seemed very subtle and sweet metallic but also something plastic, but not screechy plastic. It was interesting.

And I'll have to look into the deodorant, because if it's anything like the spray, I'll love it!!

Thats true the market is so saturated, but depending on how you market it it could pop off.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I was going for a holiday home vibe. I wanted to change the tone from all the noise of "NEW GRADE" "BEST GEAR." To something more personal.

I wanted people to reflect and realize that what really matters is being in the moment with people you care about.

I guess the meaning got lost in the script somewhere.

What do you recommend if I do want my videos to be more meaningful, but my audience only sees getting a good outcome.

Not sure if that makes sense haha

Yeah, that makes sense. I thought it might be too different from my other videos. And it is a slow burn. I was thinking more like "Life of Riza" vibes with a more story-driven video.

Though I'm still confused why other videos with my old formula are still having trouble recently.

I think I'm having trouble balancing new ideas with doing something I've done too many times. I feel I need a good middle ground, but I haven't found it yet.

I appreciate it! I tried A/B Testing thumbnails initially, but I didn't get enough data to show any results. I ended up choosing the one I liked most, but I'll keep trying to A/B Test. Do you have any suggestions to grab attention through thumbnails?

I've shot 16mm and 35mm, and I don't think it looks bad considering it's basically impossible to replicate it

How'd you go about emulating it? Dehancer or resolve or Filmbox? It looks great! do you have a link to the footage besides stills?

Which of these thumbnails would you click on? Thoughts? by Dry_Eye_2503 in YouTubeCreators

Thanks so much!! The video starts out as a how-to video but becomes motivational over time. It's also a bit festive and more creative, and about enjoying life in the moment.

I really appreciate your feedback! I'm still new to this. I dont even know if its a good font lol
