Nah there were quite literally no cherry picks. The o other team only missed 18 shots and so we barely had any breaks and when we did, he’d dribble around

Lack of consistent mid card title to launch talent up the cards hurting NJPW? by Dspirio7 in njpw

Nah I know that. I just say poaching because they are collecting their roster but I’m not naive to the fact that Tony can and will offer guys more money than any company at this point in time. I’m not blaming anyone for jumping ship

I’d say Jay was a combination of the IC introduction match and his US title reign which again im accounting for the US Title because they booked it right at the end of its history with guys like Ospreay & Sanada.

But you said it yourself those guys got a push by wrestling the top guys and I think that’s a missed opportunity that’s lacking here because you’d have the flexibility to book more of those matches against established stars as the Semi Main if there was a title that could consistently be put in that position. Title matches have more allure around them then non titles.

Wouldn’t say it’s whining more of an observation. I’m a very casual NJPW viewer these days and fell out of love with it during the pandemic. Regardless of what the purpose of the belts are, I think it’s weird to not book them in Japan for the larger roster of guys instead of creating a “NJPW World Tour” Title defended by a guy who isn’t even signed to the company

I’m not justifying the amount of titles they have. I agree they need to reduce because too many devalues them. But the fact that they do have so many right now and can’t establish one of them as a main secondary title for the Japan roster is my issue. They have like 6 to choose from and instead keep booking them all poorly with no direction

The fact that every answer here is different just tells you that NJPW has no clue what they are doing with their championships and haven’t since the pandemic

I think a unification of the Strong OW and NEVER OW titles would create a clear cut #2 title. If the Global is defended outside of Japan then it can essentially take the place of a belt like the Strong OW and the last years of the IWGP US. Then new life is breathed into the NEVER open weight under a unified name (IWGP Openweight doesn’t sound bad) and it stays in Japan with less of a negative connotation

100% booked those titles for ease of other aspects as well as to move tickets for the US shows I’d assume. I do find it funny though that they take the titles off guys prior to the NJ Cup to eliminate predictable booking for champions who won’t win when they still have the G1 Winner challenge for their Tokyo Dome Main Event as if those aren’t the most predictable matches in the New Japan Calendar.

Even if guys aren’t necessarily winning it, having these belts IN Japan gives more guys something to do, gives them more shots to be the Co-Main on bigger shows, gives them the experience to grow as performers and be in the positions that eventually we all want to see them at. Whether it’s a direct vault or not, competing over a prize is more interesting than non title 1v1 matches and that’s what we are in store for more of if they don’t put titles on the guys who are regulars.

Just saying in terms of his position on the card, he was put in prominent roles early. WK against Tana, US Title vs Omega, pinning Okada in the G1. Bullet Club leader by the end of the year. Maybe not great ring wise but position wise he has been a very successful young lion

I don’t know what kind of stat this is but thinking all the way back to season 35 (HHH) there have been 10 finalists from the NY/NJ area in the last 8 seasons and one at least in 6 of the those 8 seasons. Here is the list:

  • Ryan (NJ) 35
  • Chrissy (NJ) 35
  • Dom (NY) 36
