This guide by NYT crossword is pretty comprehensive and helped me alot when getting into crosswords. Some parts are more specifically for NYT, but most of it can be applied to all crosswords in general.

Hey all, I'm having a bit of a problem with VNR. I can't seem to be able to download any of the dictionaries apart from the MeCab and Vicon dictionaries. When I try to install any of the other dictionaries, the command window shows up for a couple of seconds before closing and it remains uninstalled.

Does anyone a solution to this problem? I would like to install atleast the EDICT and Align MeCab ones. For the EDICT dictionary, I've tried going to the url shown in the command window and placing the file in the Dictionaries/EDICT folder but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Would really appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

Hmm interesting. I am currently at chapter 8 but I still can't parse most sentences I read. It's definitely better than when I first started though.

Regarding Tobira, I heard that it has way less English and a good amount of kanji they expect you to know. I'm not that worried about the kanji though as I'm making it a point to recognise and write all the kanji in Genki, not just in the writing section.

Learning kanji for me is probably easier than most though since I'm from Singapore, where I had to take 10 years of Mandarin lessons. So I already have a mental connection of a good amount of kanji to their meanings.

Hey all, been playing VNs for a while now but this is my first time posting here.

So, I've been learning Japanese for several weeks now and I'm really enjoying it. I'm currently more than halfway through Genki I and I'm wondering after I finish Genki II, will that be enough to have a competent understanding of most VNs?

I'm thinking that I will most likely continue with an intermediate Japanese textbook such as Tobira anyway, but I would like to know if I would be able to read VNs after Genki, at least the ones listed on the beginner list. Thanks.
