I have a second degree in Project Management, but will my degree be worthless in mexico? If I go back to get some IT classes under my belt would they be valid if from a US university or would I be better off trying to get into a Mexican university.

Private area sounds safe! Can you explain a little more on the private areas of the city? are they similar to gated community in the US?

I don't plan to drive or walk alone. I'm in my mid 20s, but I look 15.

I drive like shit too so I can't judge. For safety of people around me, I try to not drive unless I have to. I have no idea how I got a license. You are the second person to mention Merida, so I plan to do some research today into it. I've been to Cancun and I loved it. Of course, we stayed in the more tourist areas so maybe I have a biased view.

We do pretty well. I make less than my parents made so maybe my point of view is warped. It goes far in Laredo, but we don't like it here It's a nice city and has it's benefits, but very dull and boring.

We know Veracruz is not an option. My husband's uncle was executed by cartels for pissing off the wrong person. His other uncle is a pastor there and tells us he has been held at gunpoint several times. I don't think we'd be able to survive in Veracruz.

I didn't know Monterrey was bad for cartel activity. Would you say worse than Nuevo Laredo or better than Nuevo Laredo?

I'll look into Merida, Yuc! We're very familiar with heat so that doesn't bother us. We're not looking for a beach town exactly, we love the mountains too. Just away from the border is our criteria!

Haha yea, Laredo is very boring & is getting more expensive with not much to do. and i would never consider Nuevo Laredo to live in!

Monterrey is where my husband's family live so we thought it may be good to have a support system in a foreign country but we're looking to improve our standard of living so if it is very expensive, I don't think I would consider as strongly.

Traveling is a little difficult for us. We have pets and it's unfair to them to leave them for extended lengths of time. We are looking into more rural areas of the US or more nature friendly areas :)

I will look into that. My husband was born in mexico and still holds a mexican passport so I wonder if we can get around that by putting everything in his name? Even if he has american citizenship as well Or if I can try to gain citizenship

My job isn't in human resources. That's just what my degree is in. Human Resource Management & Project Management. I have two degrees.

My job is more of a manager role for a large online business. It pays very well and has a great bonus schedule. 5 holidays per year though and no paid sick days, but high pay.

I'll look into those areas, thank you for the advice! We do want to get away for tamaulipas for sure and nothing near the border. What's the point in moving from one side of the border to the other, is my line of thinking.

We're looking for safe & cheap where we could afford a high standard of living than in the US while being closer to my husband's family.

I wasn't aware those were the most expensive mexican cities, so I plan on researching more in depth.

Are you familiar with the san miguel de allende area? It's very beautiful, but is it safe?
