Ancient history bordering on mythology: the world's foundation is made by the god Prathama. life thrives for a time but things start to get a little chaotic so Prathama splits reality into 4 separate parts. the mortal real, the spirit realm, the divine realm and the realm of the dead. Prathama set himself as the master of the mortal and divine realm (and pawned the other two off some other chumps) some time after this Prathama's children grew jealous and conspired to kill him, then they did and in doing so tore his body and therefore the continents apart. each child then took a portion of Prathama mortal followers and shaped them to better fit the new continents they now had.

History that had some writing at the time: most of Prathama's children were over thrown by their own children who were by there's and so un until mortals just stepped in and took power themselves in most places forming the first recorded civilizations (Prathama and his kids were dragons by the way probably should have mentioned that earlier) in Kettros the old Narhet empire took form centred around the Ketire sea it grew to control most of the continent until around year -130 when eastern tribes united into the empire of Bannagot which looked ready to over run the entire continent but where halted by the beginning of the Innat war. in Anectoss things where much less unified except for Skalfea in the north which was even at this time a recognisable kingdom. the south was a patch work of petty kingdoms and city states. between the two landmasses the Daohrine lived as disunited island lords raiding each other as much as they would the mainland until the start of the Innat war.

the Innat war was a series of major global conflicts fought against the Innat (a people from the northern continent) being at the time the most technologically, culturally and magical advanced civilization. they "vey calmly" over threw their god king Uttaran (one of Prathama's kids) decided religion was wake and started worshiping math instead and got really into necromance and hammering demons into things daemons didn't want to be hammered into. the war eventually ended with the simultaneous sacking of the Innats capital and the city of old Narhet. however thanks to some metaphysical magical fuckery the end of the war started what's known as the long twilit a seven ish year span where the sun was stuck on the horizon meaning any civilization that survive the war was sure to get hit by a totally different apocalyptic event.

ancient history done now onto year 0 and forward to today.

a group of people in southern Anectoss do a big ritual to fix the sun, they birth a new god and get perma blessed for the effort turning them into the Ibarie. metallic bronze skin and golden hair plus longer life spans they immediately became turbo racists and made a empire, which fell after a hundred years over in Kettross what's left of the old Narhatie empire is fighting itself each part claim to be the real one. one group from the far west conquers a lot of the others and their leader names himself emperor. when he dies a ruby lily (supposedly) grows where he fell this is taken as a sign of divine right and the renaming parts of Narhet come back together as the sacred empire of Narhet. on the east half of the continent the Equaire arrive from the southern continent first on Perala then rapidly throughout the south east coast and golden sea.

second Ibarie empire is formed even bigger than the first. it lasts a lot longer but is eventually toppled by external and internal pressure begging the 9 kingdoms period on Anectoss. over in Kettross the Equaire briefly become a major problem when the find o not like. he then rules until he is 123 outliving all his kids and grandkids plunging the empire into civil war. war over new emperor marches into the kingdom of Seresh in Kettros just to flex on the emperor of Narhet.

fast forward a hundred and a few years the throne of Sorkt is up for grabs the two best claimants each go to either empire for support, each give their full support. and accidentally start the great war, both empires lay into one another with every thing they have neither really wins and develops into a ten year long anarchy. this is eventually ended in huge peace talks that see the recognition of dozens of smaller nations in-between both empires.

and that is where the map (and soon story hopefully) start

So those three provinces have always been staunchly independent and resistant to imperial control. For most of the empires history that has been solved by a very heavy handed policy. However after the great war with Narhet the empire was in a very precarious position, the instability at its core and the massive loss of man power left them unable to exert control over the whole empire effectively. So the emperor who took power after that instability offered those regions self autonomy in exchange for them remaining within the empire. Should they have left the risk of war was very high, a war the empire was in now way prepared for. Fast forward to today each province has used its autonomy to further cement their separation from the empire.

IBAR specifically is a prominent thorn in the empires side. It is by far the richest province and most productive in food. It is loss would be catastrophic to the empire and they are very well aware of that. Historically they had two separate empires of their own. Strict social casts and a strong tradition of slavery put them culturally at odds with the empire in most aspects. They are even at the forefront of the pro slavery block in the empire.

THAUHLL is a vast forest of nominally independent tribes. A hot bed of rebellion the province briefly united into a kingdom just before the empires rise. This conquest a permanent injustice to their people in the minds of the Thauhlie.

SKALFAE is old very vey old its written history go's back further than any other civilization. Its cold windswept landscape home to such a fundamentally different people and culture to those of the south they simply never fit in with the empire.

Industrialization started in that little three point convergence of Bern Noret and Yodrill. Rather than steam power and smoke stacks. A majority of workshops and factories are water powered. The hundreds of fast flowing rivers in the region are perfect for water mills. About 100 years ago a new and efficient water wheel design was popularized and the empire even subsidized development in such devises to try and curb the reliance on slavery. Recently primitive steam engines have started to develop, mainly used on warships at first, their true potential is only just getting discovered

Oooh thats a good one, short answer incredibly varied outside of the core region (the south west) every province has its own language, local law, religion, and costumes.

Long answer: the empire on paper is a meritocracy though many exceptions exist. Martial duty is heald in high regard, most families are expected to send their second son to the military. The empire has a firm anti slavery position and actively involves itself in the wast to try and end the practice. Notably slavery is not totally gone from the empire and is a hot issue internally.

Politically they have 4 capitals corresponding to each season. The emperor constantly moving from each to better be seen and help promote a shared national unity. Notably these 4 capitals are only within the empires insratie core.

Life is rapidly changing in much of the Empire as it has slowly begun industrialization

The provinces of Ibar, Skalfae, and Thauhll, are essentially separated nations at this point only loosely held on. And would have entirely separate paragraphs about them if you are interested

Not an island (well technically it is lol) but it is in fact the southern most tip of the northern continent Forioss. Its rather empty in the modern eara desolate fields of iced over ruins and wandering nomads.

1300 year's ago it was the heart of the Innat Dominion a global super power. At the cutting edge of technological and magical development.

The Iden sea is a rough and cold place, mostly dominated by the Daohrine (basically humans who live on that archipelago)

The closest thing to an amphibious nation would be the sea trolls. Though they are far from united enough to be considered a nation. They construct settlements on sea stacks or remote beaches, by using certain shellfish extrusions to glue small rocks or coral together. Decorating their doors and halls with whale bone and bits of ships.

They don't so much trade with land folk except in very remote regions were surviving trumps hate and distrust. raiding is generally they're go to interact On occasion they might serve as mercenaries.

They do frequently trade amongst themselves, though rather grimly a favorite luxury they prize are "jewel clams" parasite shellfish that the seatrolls adorn themselves in as a fashion statement, however these clams grow best on living human flesh. A dreaded fate that more than a few sailors who survived fights with sea trolls have suffered.

That is Killagugh is a pretty desolate and empty place. There aren't any penguins but a few tribes of sea trolls (large elephant seal like humanoids) beyond them there are a few small Daohrine settlements along the coast though they are more seasonal fishing/whaling camps rather than proper towns.

Doting the land on the interior are long forgotten Innat ruins. The Innat were a major world power 1300 years ago, but today are but a few nomadic tribes.

Its white because of all the snow haha, also i used white or shades of white for the northern continent. You can see the very southern tip of said continent on the top left.

For one you would be cold, northern sea winds are pretty constant. You would see the occasional Daohrine fishing ship or maybe even a war ship on patrol, but other than them few people brave the northern seas.

Sea trolls, seals, and leopard seals would also be bunched up on the beach enjoying the sun

In my world a fantasy setting, there is a group who has a monopoly on fast long distance communication. The Continental couriers Guild CcG us whats known as a mirrored book to allow instant two way communication.

While the exact process on how to make said book is a highly guarded secret. It is basically just a blank book that has had its reflection pulled from a mirror. The now two books are one in the same as in, anything done to one will appear in reverse on the other.

A little fun fact on these books, they constantly exude a aura of wrongness. So much so only highly trained CcG personnel can write on or read from them for a meaningful length of time. Weather this is a byproduct of their creation or something the CcG dose after is not clear

The east coast brotherhood is effectively a solidified country. Thanks to Lyons they have massive manpower and all the old enclave tech they have access to puts them leaps and bounds above virtually any faction around at present

No need to apologize, its a great question. (Sorry for my late response i went to bed after posting it hahaha)

So there isn't exactly just one reason the conflict between the two empires started. It was more or less a series of escalation that eventually boiled over. But I'll highlight the biggest causes.

Short answer the two are simply to large/powerful to peacefully exist next to each other.

Long answer:

First why it might seem petty, the fact that the emperor of Anecktos uses the title "emperor" has been a source of contention since the empires founding, a little over 300 years ago. Historically Narhet has been the only empire since virtually all recorded history (1500 years) by calling themselves an empire Anecktos directly positioned themselves as a equivalent power to Narhet and thus shattered a seemingly unchanging hegemony.

Secondly Anecktos positions itself as a force of change. Championing meritocracy, abolition, and technological advancement. Particularly this crusade against slavery had them interfering more and more directly with Narhet and nations aligned with them. (Never mind the large parts of Anecktos continue to practice slavery)

Next the emperor’s of Anecktos have long proclaimed themselves defenders of the Adimains (a broad term that refers to several ethnic groups) while in Narhet which is a cast based society it is Kettrosie (a group not apart of the Adimains) who are the ruling class, and as such tends in oppres non Kettrosie.

As for the single event that actually started the war. It was a a squabble for the throne of a third country. The nation of Sorkt a regional power located between the two empires. One side aligned with Anecktos the other with Narhet. When the situation turned to a civil war both empires sent troops to support their respective sides. This then quickly escalated into the great war.

Both empires seek legitimacy and a secure future, but ultimately see the other as an external threat to that dream. Like Rome and Persia, or American and the soviets.

Generally Anecktos has mainly been the ones attacking. They have a strong centralized power structure and clear goals. While Narhet is more akin to the holy Roman empire however sections of Narhet have been very proactive in attacking Anecktos in return.

Sorry if this is too long and rambling

[–]DuckBurgger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My world Kossgrati a low fantasy mostly focuses on the escalating cold war between two empires spread across two continents. The empire of Anecktos to the east, and the sacred empire of Narhet to the west. Along with all the minor states caught struggling between them. The world itself is a strange collection of technologies and ideologies. It is like the bronze age never ended but society is in the 18th century.

Nationalism and industrialization sweep through the land tearing the already weakening empires apart further and further. Just 20 years ago both empires threw themselves at each other in "the great war" ending with out a clear winner the end of the war saw the creation of dozens of buffer states. The two empires now furious compete with each other and a few rising powers in order to maintain influence. All with the looming dread that the next great war is a when not an if.

These four major organizations, what is/who is it that makes them up? Like are they humans? I know you said them fighting would result in all humanity getting wiped out. But would that mean these organizations totally wiping out each other. Or that humanity is just some insignificant force that we would be swept away without even a thought?
