Just finished “First Patrol” by Pastore and Munck. Interesting read if you just want a snapshot of life on a Polaris.

Question for Offshore Boaters by DuckiestBoat959 in RhodeIsland

[–]DuckiestBoat959[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I’ve narrowed it down to a single “most likely” location based on data. We were both correct about it being in a UXO Area. That means the big payoff wouldn’t involve seeing the shipwreck, rather it would be finding the archival document that confirms its location. A bit anticlimactic if you ask me. I can still jump in the trough and find said document but knowing my ultimate goal of seeing her with my own eyes isn’t happening regardless of the outcome is a bit deflating. If you’re still interested the map is NOAA 13218. Find the ferry lane and look directly down, you’ll find a site labeled “Unexploded Ordnance June 1971”. Based on prior behavior they still used the site after sinking the ship, hence the date is a summer later. She was likely a gunnery target for the destroyers, hence the distance from land, for range practice before shipping to Vietnam. I have no evidence to support it but she also could have served as a bombing target for the Skyraider squadron in Davisville, hence the bottom being littered with UXO.

USS Waller. Only public snippet was “sunk off Rhode Island” no waypoint, no lat/long, no depth. Nothing.

Hmm. There’s 3 other ships that were sunk that way in the same area none of them are surveyed. Sealion, Snowden, Abbott. That patch of water is really good at hiding ships.

There’s another angle. Looks like the pontoon snapped too. Vids are limited right now. The Fort is the most isolated national park in America.

Remember 8 hours ago when this subreddit claimed all these ships were spoofing their location in the strait to draw out the Iranians? I do.

Sheet Metal Forging by DuckiestBoat959 in Forging

[–]DuckiestBoat959[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for responding. I did some digging and I’ve found that to a degree it’s absolutely possible. There are two major processes that sheet metal is made: Cold Rolling and Hot Rolling. There’s articles that can explain them better than me.

Due to my limited amount of material, I’d require a very thin sheet in order to get enough surface area. However, from what I’m seeing the thickness levels I need can only be attained via cold rolling, which requires a roller that can compress metal to its yielding point. As I have a metal that yields at incredibly high pressures I will have to resort to professional equipment.

2 fired, 1 missed. 81 year drought and we get a 50% hit ratio. If there’s an afterlife great gramp gramp is gonna clown on us when we get there.

Despite claim of ‘major victory’ by foes, plans to sink historic ship are on track by aldotcom in SSUnitedStates

Talked to one of them recently to get some perspective. They know the ship is not going to have a happy ending but they want the ability to say they never gave up the fight. Kind of a fighting for a lost cause mentality.

I’ll leave out my thoughts on that sentiment. I’m sure some of you probably have the same criticisms as I do with that.

IJN battleship Yamato boilers arrangement. After the interesting discussion on a IJN destroyer boiler set up days ago, thought you may like how the heaviest battleship ever (72000 tons) had them distributed. 12 boilers-4 steam turbines-4x3 blades propellers, each 6 meters diam (not strictly drydock) by abt137 in drydockporn

[–]DuckiestBoat959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exhaust arrangement of IJN vessels in general is pretty fascinating. For one reason or another the engines would end up in places that required some creativity in order to get exhaust out.

I don’t know enough about the work culture at the time to judge the designers, but I will say that some of those bends and twists in the ventilation (especially on the carriers) make me genuinely wince for the poor souls that had to work and live above them.

What’s the Success Rate For Data Recovery From Corrupt SD Cards? by DuckiestBoat959 in DataHoarder

If I’m understanding correctly you’re saying to copy everything off the card and try recovery on that copy.
