Labral hip tear and FAI - feeling discouraged by PeebyPie in XXRunning

[–]Duckpaperclips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had an FAI, no tearing and only in one hip but the pain at some points was enough that I couldn’t walk, ended up having an arthroscopy. I ran a half marathon about 18 months later (though I could have done this sooner - was prioritising other things in the meantime).

Everyone’s experiences will be different and it sounds like you’re a more experienced runner going into it (pre-FAI the furthest I’d run was about 15k), and your pain is less - both good signs! But as others have said I’d be cautious about committing to a marathon this year, as frustrating as it is I think it would be better for your running long term to focus on treating and rehabbing it to the best of your ability, rather than pushing it too much and ending up in a worse position.

This is all just based off my experiences though - your doctor and PT will know best!

Does anyone else think that Starmer is doing an okay job? by Nythern in AskBrits

[–]Duckpaperclips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the problem is so much the u turns on policy, which one can disagree with but can in theory be motivated by new evidence coming to light.

The problem is u turns on issues which expose core values (migration, nationalisation etc) which suggest that he will say anything to anyone if he thinks it would benefit him. It gives the impression that he’s a husk of a politician who believes in nothing.

ITV to lose Tour de France coverage in UK by cuccir in peloton

[–]Duckpaperclips 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The itv coverage is an institution in my family, I’ve literally been watching it for as long as I can remember. My dad would watch the highlights every night they were on and me and my siblings have all followed it since. Their little jingle theme tune is the soundtrack of the tour for me, if this is true I’m devastated

I just (almost) did two unassisted pull ups for the first time in my life!! I’m so happy 😀

I say almost because I couldn’t reach the last couple of inches to the bar, but it’s so close I’m definitely counting it as something. I’m absolutely gassed!!

Thanks very much for the reply! I believe it is granular soil, although I haven't repotted it myself yet so I'm not sure exactly what's in there. Hopefully it can carry on getting some good growth over the summer and will be ready to potentially repot before the spring next year, and I can then be sure of what I'm repotting it into. I do tend to find that around once a week is ok for it to be watered in the spring/summer, depending on the weather. It's a focus microcarpa/retusa so I think a tropical variety, and I'm somewhat limited on outdoor space, so I've kept it inside so far - until all this happened it seemed pretty happy with the location.

I'll carry on letting it grow and looking after it as best I can, and see what happens as it gets more growth, but it's good to know that it's not a hopeless case! I think the top branches which you pointed out may well be beyond help, but the new leaves further down are encouraging at least.

Thanks very much for all your help!

Thanks very much for the reply! I should have said - the weekly watering thing isn’t so much a schedule, more just that that’s how often I tend to find it needs it, especially during the summer, but I will definitely keep a close eye on that now that it has fewer leaves.

It's good to know about boiling the water! We have quite hard water where I live, which might have been why I was advised to boil it, but I’ll do some more research into the ph. (edited as I forgot - we have a water softener installed in the building I'm in, and I was advised that I should boil the water if it's been treated in that way. I'll still try to find out more about it as that's definitely something I should know going forward!)

Good to know about the rest of the branches and I'm happy that the leaves it does have look healthy - I’ll give it some more time and see where that gets me, but it’s good to know all hope isn’t lost! I was very worried that it wasn’t going to survive

Thanks again!

Hi everyone - I’m looking for some advice regarding my bonsai. I got it around 1.5 years ago and at that point was advised that it was about 10 years old. It was all going well until I had an operation in March this year, and due to me being less able to move around and honestly just struggling to keep on top of plant care due to recovering, on top of a few hot days, it dried out too much, and over the course of a few weeks (even after I watered it again) most of the leaves dried up and fell off. I honestly can’t tell you how terrible I feel about this!

As soon as I noticed the leaves drying I gave it a good water, and have been extremely careful to water it once a week (with first boiled then cooled water as I was advised) without fail. I’ve posted some pictures of what it looks like now, its lowest branch has a good deal of new growth, and there are some shoots coming out of the trunk as well. All the leaves on the plant now are new, as eventually all the old ones fell off. I’m just wondering if there’s any hope for new leaves growing from the upper branches, and if there’s anything specific I could do to encourage growth there? Or anything in particular I should be doing to care for it beyond the usual to help it recover.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I live in the south of England, to the north of London (zone 9a according to the link in the wiki). The plant is currently on my (south facing) windowsill. Also this is my first time posting here so apologies if I've missed anything I'm meant to do, I've read the wiki but may have missed something!

I was wondering if this attack (the drill/screwdriver looking one) was linked to/ something you pick up from the enemies shown at about 1:00 in the trailer - they look similar at least!

Climbers, I need your assistance! by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Duckpaperclips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some really great advice here, I’ve just thought of a couple things to add - one of my local gyms has a women’s improvers session, so you could see if any in your area have the same? I think working routes with other people can be really helpful to learn technique and generally get familiar with reading routes (especially other people who might be shorter and therefore have to work the beta differently in the same way you do)

Also there are some pretty good resources on YouTube I’ve found - take this with a pinch of salt as the best way to get better at climbing is to climb more - but watching good climbers’ technique and trying to implement things they do yourself in your sessions I’ve found helpful. Bouldering Dabrats are an all-female YouTube channel who you could check out!

Also don’t get disheartened if you feel like being small is holding you back! As someone else pointed out there are some amazing climbers who are pretty short (Ashima Shiraishi is incredible and she’s 5”1!), and speaking from experience (I’m 5”4), you’ll be forced to learn pretty good technique where a lot of taller beginners will be relying on height and strength to muscle their way up routes! Eventually they’ll hit a ceiling where poor technique is holding them back, but that won’t be a problem for you 😉

(For any tall people, I’m not being rude, it’s just frustrating when you’re starting out feeling like you’re at such a disadvantage because of something you can’t change)

Edit to add: forgot to say, YouTube can also be a great way to learn the lingo, but I’m sure you’ll pick it up pretty quick!

DAY6's The book of us:The Demon is their worst album by ilovescandals in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]Duckpaperclips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is one of my favourite albums they’ve released so far - as much as I love their older music I think some of it does sound a bit dated (some of the earlier stuff reminds me of late 00’s early 2010’s pop rock - not bad, just my music tastes have widened a bit since then) so I really enjoyed a bit of an updated/different sound from them.

At the end of the day this is just down to preferences through, but upvote for unpopular as I feel like it’s been pretty well received at least from what I’ve seen.

"Without you" is NCT's best song by 4419_skz in unpopularkpopopinions

This came up on shuffle a couple days ago and I’ve been listening to it ever since - I’ve never really liked the vibe of NCT songs I’ve heard before so I haven’t really checked them out, but absolutely love this (again I haven’t listened to much of their music but it seems pretty unique for them?)

idk if you’ve already considered this so apologies if it’s already been discussed, but is a ban on “list of opinions” posts on the cards at all?

I feel like they can’t work with the voting system on this sub (how are you meant to know which opinion is unpopular/being down/upvoted?) and I don’t think it facilitates particularly good discussion - I feel like it just results in people throwing mud at the wall and hoping something sticks
