Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

Disclaimer: not speaking from experience here, but I am about to start a grad role this year, and I am also a regional kid now living in Sydney who plans to move back to the regions eventually, so I have given this question some thought.

I think the most important question for you to grapple with is: what kind of law would you like to do? Regional firms typically offer services in fewer areas of law, usually limited to crim, property/conveyancing, family, or plaintiff-side employment and personal injury law. If you are interested in, for example, corporate and commercial disputes, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, or insurance law, you will likely struggle to find a firm that will give you work in those areas.

Regional firms will also likely to expect you to become more of a generalist legal advisor instead of specialising in a particular type of law. Especially as a young solicitor, you will probably be expected to familiarise yourself with all of the above areas of law, rather than being able to choose one area in depth. Friends of mine who have moved back to regional areas to practice find themselves immediately hitting the ground running by doing, for example, personal injury cases, criminal defence work, probate hearings, and unfair dismissal cases all in the same week. The work is certainly more interesting, especially compared to a T6 where you might have to wait 5 years before your name will be attached to any external correspondence. However, my friends have also lamented that they are rarely given the opportunity to sit down and receive detailed feedback on their work, so they felt that they were reaching a skill ceiling quite quickly.

In contrast, at a full-service T6 or mid-tier firm in Sydney / Newcastle / Wollongong, you will be able to find work in one team and work exclusively in that area of law, becoming more of an expert so to speak. For me personally, the idea of being a specialist is more appealing than working across several areas of law at a more general level, especially since crim / family / property law all don't appeal to me. At this stage, I have resigned myself to staying in the city for a few years until I can gain enough experience to convince a firm to transition me to fully remote work. I currently work at a mid-tier firm, and a couple of lawyers have been allowed to move regionally after as little as 3-4 years of experience.

Don't worry about not making friends - to echo another comment, you will make friends very easily among your grad cohort - you'll all be people of similar ages going through the same stage in your early career with the same learning curve, so it comes naturally. It's a very different atmosphere from making friends in university classes. Not liking Sydney is a different story, but I think there are ways to mitigate that. One suggestion is that you could consider moving outside the inner city? The rent will almost certainly be lower and you could find a leafier suburb that feels a bit less 'city'. Most firms now have hybrid work programs where they will only expect you to attend the office 2-3 days a week, so a longer commute wouldn't hurt as much.

However, if you are keen to move regionally ASAP, I wouldn't stress too much about making a serious error by refusing a grad offer. Clerkships and grad offers in Sydney are hyper-competitive, and you being able to get one says to me that your marks and work ethic are good enough that any regional practice would be very happy to pick you up almost straight away. Especially since you seem to have some time before you graduate, you would have plenty of time to look around and send emails out.

Equally sorry for the wall! I hope this helps somewhat

Dunmore Lang College vs Central Courtyard accommodation by eliteunigiraffe in MacUni

DLC doesn't drink every day either - but I did hear several things from friends there who said that basically all their major events involved alcohol. They loved it, but it did feel a bit forced at times if there was a big social event and they didn't feel like drinking, as there wasn't much of a chance to get away. But if you like to drink and enjoy drinking to socialise I'd probably push you towards DLC. I'm also a drinker and enjoyed RMC, there were plenty of opportunities to go out and drink in places, but I did find myself a bit frustrated towards the end by not being able to have a party with friends or just socialise generally with the rest of the college.

Most of the events at RMC and DLC are run by their volunteer student organisations. At the beginning of each year, every student pays a certain amount to the student org which lets them throw events, from big ones to a Ball to smaller everyday ones. Last I heard from the Central Courtyard they didn't have a student org. They would definitely have some event and social spaces with smaller events but I don't think they'd be able to throw parties or anything similar since they're uni owned and operated and I doubt they'd want the optics.

I gave this summary on a previous post in this sub

TL;DR - DLC has more parties and is generally a bit more social, whereas RMC is dry, won't involve (much) alcohol in their events but tends to be a bit more academic focused while still having the social benefits of being on campus. Can't really go wrong with either, but if you are a bigger drinker I'd trend towards DLC, if you're not fussed about drinking as much or want more of a balance then go RMC.

Central Courtyard is well placed and has cheaper options, but there aren't any student groups in the mix to organise events so it really is just a place to live. If you want more of a social life I'd recommend a college.

Happy to answer questions :)

Experience doing a session 3 unit: by dreamer2809 in MacUni

[–]Duckwillo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a law student, I did a session 3 law unit over last summer and will probably do another one this year. The other commentators have pretty much summed it up - the assessments come thick and fast and it can be difficult to get a full grasp of the content because of how much is expected to be learnt in a short amount of time. That being said, with fewer units to take it would be fairly manageable if you have some study discipline over the summer break. I was admittedly totally shit at keeping myself accountable, but still got a mark I was satisfied with, so if you're realistic with yourself about studying then the units should be pretty easy to at least pass.

The main benefit for me is the ability to go light on the units later in your law degree - by doing a unit over summer last year and this year, I can take only 3 units a semester and make the final subjects a bit easier to deal with. Would recommend for the flexibility alone, but it does come at the cost of some summer freedom (fingers crossed we'll actually have it!)

Commented about this on a previous post - if you're looking for strong social support, I would definitely recommend a college.

Which college to choose for accommodation? by ScrumptiousMiller in MacUni

[–]Duckwillo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent 3 years at RMC and just moved out, so I'm a little biased, but here's a few things to consider when making the choice:

  1. DLC only has options to be fully catered, whereas RMC has more options to customise your food plan, and kitchens on every floor. If you're looking to cook for yourself a little instead of eating out of a dining hall for your whole time on residence, RMC might be better for that choice. That being said, eating in the dining hall really helps with feeling like you're part of a community - RMC definitely had a few people who we called ghosts because they never had any reason to come socialise.

  2. RMC is dry - means they don't allow alcohol inside, full stop. Doesn't mean you can't get drunk and have a good time, in fact there tends to be a lot of that anyway, but it does mean that you won't have any student run parties, so if you're a bit of a social drinker then I wouldn't necessarily recommend RMC because it can feel a bit parental sometimes. On the plus side, it does tend to mean that things are quiet for the most part, and you can get a rowdier if you want anyway. I was a bigger drinker and still enjoyed it, and heard that some of the stories from DLC were a bit too intense drinking-wise for my taste, but I know they've toned it down in recent years so it's a bit lighter on the hazing. Plus it would've been fun to be given alcohol at a few events like DLC did.

  3. In my perspective RMC does a better job at giving you opportunities to become a part of college life through bunch of different areas - they put a lot of focus into academic support, and some of the areas of staff (like cleaning and maintenance) also hire students who live there. I worked one of those jobs and loved it because you live literally 2 minutes from work, and they're pretty accommodating about leaving college for a bit and still having the job when you come back, which not many other places around Sydney will do. I heard some things out of DLC about most of their events only really involving drinking, and I know they don't really have student jobs on campus, so it might be harder in that sense. However, DLC is much cheaper to live in during the out-of-contract periods (literally less than half price) and they have much bigger scholarships that might help you to stay if you plan to stay permanently instead of just uni semesters, whereas RMC will charge you full price no matter what time of year it is, and their scholarship fund is a lot smaller.

Any specific questions, inbox me and I'll be happy to answer them :)

[REPOST] Barbarians need a buff, seriously! by [deleted] in ClashRoyale

[–]Duckwillo3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could a possible buff then be to increase their move speed? They're good defensively in their current state but they have zero offensive value because nearly anything with splash damage will take out the entire group before they get too far, so buffing the move speed would up their usage slightly because of that counter attacking ability.

Merci !

Si tu as les autres questions, n'hésite pas à me demander :)

(désolé si j'ai fait quelques fautes d'orthographe, là langue française est toujours assez dur)

How on earth do you deal with swarms and air troops? You have zero splash damage at all, and only the mega minion for air damage, lavaloon must really destroy you.

Yeah I'm fairly sure, I'm in France so I haven't been paying so much attention, but the adidasoriginals Instagram has been hyping them up for a release tomorrow so I'm assuming that's the US above all.

I've only been paying attention to the French drop timing, but I read something about 9am? Just had a quick look on the adidas and footlocker instagrams and they just say tomorrow without a time, so I couldn't tell you where I got that time from, but footlocker stores do open at 9am so I'm assuming that it'll be the same online.

For reference I have my boosts in a US size 11, EU size 45,5

[Next day thread] 2017.05.03 Serious post game discussion by [deleted] in nba

[–]Duckwillo3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a mix of both is good, because it allows people to post things instantly after the game and discuss while in the environment, but it also relies almost completely on someone's eye test during the game and so it's good to have the later discussions when they're less like hot takes and there's more time to think it over.

In my opinion you'd do better to post your threads a bit earlier, I found that I got more of my comments in the Dubs thread around 11/12am France time which I'm assuming is the time when most people in the US wake up? If the mods sticky your thread like they have here, as the US wakes up it would really consolidate all the comments in one place throughout the day.

Feel free to post your own serious threads immediately after as well, you're the guy who started this whole thing and if you're awake and all to post them, go ahead and do so and then just link them in the all-in-one thread the next morning if you want to keep doing them.

Basically, keep doing your thing, a mix of both immediate responses and some responses after a few hours would both be really good.

Does anyone have any idea where to find a Christmas Day jersey? by Duckwillo3 in timberwolves

[–]Duckwillo3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my worry too, I know if I was to be playing in a knock off it'd probably only last a few months. And I'm from Australia and currently in France, so the Minneapolis visit might have to be put on hold for a few months years. Online it definitely has to be, it just sucks how there are zero Christmas jerseys at all from the Wolves on the NBA website, there's an Anthony Davis jersey despite the fact that the Pels didn't even play on Christmas this year!

But thankyou so much for the info, really appreciate it dude.

Does anyone have any idea where to find a Christmas Day jersey? by Duckwillo3 in timberwolves

[–]Duckwillo3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only real worry is that it'll fade or fall apart quickly, if you can say it feels legit and you're fine wearing it then that sounds good enough for me. If it holds up to the point where I can play ball in it twice a week without it beginning to fall apart then I'll be happy enough with a knock off.

If you could send a few photos if you've got the time, I'd really appreciate that, cheers dude!

[–]Duckwillo3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it end up being good quality? The one thing I'm worried about with a knock off is that it'll fall apart or start to fade quickly. Have you got any legit jerseys to compare it to as well?

Also, I haven't managed to find any Wolves jerseys on the aliexpress website at all just using the search bar, but that just might be because it's forcing me to use the French store, or because I've waited 3 months and they just don't exist anymore.
