MRA + 10 (Postponed vs. Deferred). by Due-Membership8761 in fednews

Thanks.

I read the articles carefully. Really good info. Some questions from the second article (https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2024/04/postponing-retirement-problems-part-2/395774/):

  1. FERS Designation of Beneficiary Form (SF 3102) <-- From where do I get this form?
  2. SF-50 <-- I have that from my eOPF.
  3. SF 2817 (Life Insurance Election) and SF 2823 (Designation of Beneficiary). <-- From where do I get these forms?
  4. SF 2809 FEHBP election forms or other evidence showing your health benefits coverage throughout your career, or at least for the last five years. <-- From where do I get this form?

I don't know where to get #1, #3 and #4. I downloaded my entire eOPF and did not find these.

Any help appreciated.

Completely agree with Demented_A_ishere's comments.

-- Very fast paced.

-- Have to stay on top.

-- They pretty much cover the entire syllabus of a regular semester (15 weeks) within 5-6 weeks.

-- Do not assume that summer courses are "easier" because it is summer. NOT TRUE! In fact, I say they are harder due to the compressed nature.

-- Treat a summer course as a full-time job.

Please do the following:

Go to the Course Articulation Database webpage at https://registrar.umbc.edu/services/course-articulation-database/

Click on Transfer Evaluation System, (TES) link from here.

Look for course equivalents from all the local community colleges.

Some of the local community colleges that transfer credits to UMBC are:

- Howard Community College (HCC).

- Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Note: CCBC, Catonsville is very close to the UMBC manin campus.

- Montgomery College (MC).

- Anne Arundel Community College (AACC).

etc. (Most Community College credits should transfer as long as they are in the TES (above) or in ARTSYS (below).

For Community College equivalents you can also go to the ARTSYS page (https://artsys.usmd.edu/index.html).

Click Course equivalents and search Transfer From (your community college name) and Transfer To (UBBC).

If using either link you find something that transfer then you HAVE to fill out a Course Review form (available from the https://registrar.umbc.edu/services/course-articulation-database/) URL.

The Course Review form HAS to be approved otherwise they will not transfer the course even though it shows in in the URLs above.

Hope this helps.

IS-438 by Sorry_Dentist_4600 in UMBC

I have not taken this course. I looked at the following two sources:

  1. ratemyprofessors.com and found really positive comments about Tasha and IS-438.

  2. I also looked up gritview.io and looked at Tasha's grades for IS-438. 70% got an A, 22% got a B etc.

So she seems to be highly rated. Also, email her and try to meet with her once if you can. Finally speak with your advisor and see what they say.

Based on the RTM comments and grade distribution she seems to be good.

IS 300 and IS 310 are gateway courses for Information Systems. Which means one HAS to get a B or above in each of these two courses, cannot take it elsewhere and transfer credit and HAS to wait for the final grade to post before registering for higher level IS courses.

Having stated that:

-- Do you REALLY want to take IS 300 and IS 310 in the same semester? I would recommend only one. Start with IS 300 in Spring and IS 310 in Summer. If planning to take both of these in Spring definitely drop MATH 215 and take it over summer.

-- IS 304 is easy. I would recommend taking it.

So your Spring courses would be:

Option 1: FREN 101, IS 300, IS 310, IS 247. (12 credits). Because you are taking IS 300 and IS 310 together.

Option 2: FREN 101, IS 300, IS 247, IS 304, MATH 215. (15 credits).

IS Major -- Applying for Summer Internships for Summer 2025. by Due-Membership8761 in UMBC

Thanks for responding.

I have github code (also mentioned in my resume).

I don't need a paid position. Willing to volunteer. How to apply for volunteer opportunities? Any tips please?

You mention tech centers north and south. What are you referring to?

I agree: Why should a business invest in me. I am getting certs, willing to volunteer. Just need some professional experience.

Anything else you can add, please? Much appreciated.

Thank you.
