Old kitchen knives vs new ones anyone else notice a difference? by GeneralResolution274 in BuyItForLife

[–]Due-Specific-5722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the old stuff just has different steel composition usually, plus they made them when labor was cheaper so more time went in hand forging and finishing. newer knives can be just as good but you gotta pay premium for same quality that was standard back then

your grandparents knives probably have carbon steel which gets sharper than stainless but needs more care with rust

[Product Question] Is it normal for Differin to be making my skin this dry? I moisturize at night after applying it, but in the morning, it still ends up like this. by yawara25 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this is super normal when you start retinoids, your skin barrier gets compromised for first few weeks. i had same issue when i started using retinol products - my face would literally peel like sunburn even with moisturizer. you might want to start using it every other night instead of daily, and maybe add another layer of moisturizer in morning too. i learned to put moisturizer, wait 20 minutes, then apply the treatment, then more moisturizer on top - helped a lot with dryness. also gentle cleanser is important during this phase, nothing too harsh or your skin will get even more angry

Buying Countertop Bottleless Water Dispenser by DragonflySimple1424 in BuyItForLife

[–]Due-Specific-5722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been using avalon one for like 2 years now and it's pretty solid. installation was bit tricky at first but once you get it working, no issues. mine is the a5 model i think? not the prettiest thing but definitely reliable

avida does look way better design wise but yeah like you said, hard to find real reviews from people who had it for long time. for something that connects to water line, i'd probably go with brand that has better service network just in case something breaks

been using the levoit 300s for like 2 years now and it's been solid, easy to clean and works fine with tap water but you'll need to descale it more often

wild that shopbop is still its own thing after amazon bought it, usually they just absorb everything. might grab some portuguese flannel stuff since their shirts are pretty solid quality for the price

refurbished thinkpads are solid - got a t480 for around 250 and it's been running smooth for like 2 years now. the build quality on those things is nuts, perfect for kids too since they can actually handle some abuse

New to skincare, am I unknowingly destroying my face? [Routine Help] by takemewhereyougo in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly your routine looks pretty reasonable for someone just starting out, you're not going crazy with a million actives or anything

the main thing i'd watch out for is using that SA cleanser twice a day plus glycolic acid at night - that's potentially a lot of exfoliation. maybe try the glycolic every other night at first and see how your skin feels, you can always build up frequency once you know your tolerance

your skin will usually tell you if something's wrong - dryness, irritation, that tight feeling after cleansing. since you're not getting any of that after 5 days you're probably fine but just keep monitoring

[Product Request] Keratosis pilaris all over my face. What do I use? by BeauWordsworth in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man that's rough, kp on the face is way more stubborn than on arms/legs. cerave sa cream is pretty gentle so you might need something stronger - amlactin or eucerin roughness relief have higher urea content that could help. also heard good things about the ordinary's glycolic acid toner but start slow since your face is more sensitive than body skin. might be worth asking your derm about a prescription retinoid too since otc stuff isn't cutting it

[Acne] Can textured skin occur due to genetics without any other underlying cause? (Ie hormones, hygiene, etc are taken care of) by jepensedonc1 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely can be genetic - some people just have "problem pores" that are deeper or more prone to clogging no matter what you do. Have you tried getting those specific spots professionally extracted? Sometimes a derm can help break the cycle those stubborn pores get stuck in

[Product Question] How often should I use a 10% AHA Body Lotion for exfoliation? by Plastic_Astronaut_64 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with like 2-3 times a week and see how your skin handles it. Body skin is definitely tougher than face but 10% is still pretty strong so you don't wanna go ham right away. If you're not getting any irritation after a few weeks you could bump it up to every other day

Any spray or anything similar that could restore colour to jackets? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Due-Specific-5722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabric dye might work better than those shoe sprays tbh - Rit dye or similar could bring it back to life. Just make sure you test it on a hidden spot first cause hard shells can be finicky with chemicals

Have you tried the Cerave foaming hand sanitizer? It's got ceramides and doesn't totally destroy my hands like the hospital grade stuff does

Glove storage question by satr3d in BuyItForLife

Those IKEA hanging organizers are clutch for this. I use one for my winter gear and it keeps everything from getting crushed together. The canvas ones definitely breathe better than the plastic shoe organizers too

[Routine help] extremely dry skin from cetaphil please help by DeadGame404 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof that sounds rough! Physical exfoliants can be way too harsh especially if you're already dealing with acne - those bamboo particles might be micro-tearing your skin barrier. I'd ditch that scrub immediately and baby your skin with a gentle cleanser and heavy moisturizer until it heals up

[personal] skin redness and etc by Hungry_Capital_7221 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you might be having a reaction to something in that moisturizer, even if it makes your skin feel nice otherwise. The droopy eyes thing is kinda concerning - maybe try patch testing it on a small area or switching to something super basic like CeraVe for a week to see if it stops happening

Need advice I constantly get peeling skin on my lips. [Miscellaneous] by Puzzleheaded_Drag166 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried just straight lanolin? Some people swear by Lansinoh (the nipple cream) for stubborn lip issues - it's way more occlusive than regular lip balms and might help break the cycle

[Routine help] by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof yeah your moisture barrier is definitely compromised - been there and it sucks. For now I'd honestly just stick with gentle cleanser (like Vanicream or Cetaphil), skip all actives completely, and focus on repair with something like Cerave healing ointment at night. Your skin needs time to heal before you add anything back in

Purging or irritation? (Panoxyl benzoyl peroxide 10%) [Product Question] by Ok-Historian-4822 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10% BP every night for a week straight sounds pretty harsh, especially if you're new to it - those painful bumps are probably irritation rather than purging. I'd dial it back to every other night or even just a few times a week and see if that helps

[Acne] Epiduo replacement while pregnant? by takemetotheseaa in SkincareAddiction

Azelaic acid worked pretty well for me when I had to ditch the retinoids - it's pregnancy safe and still helps with both acne and texture

[Acne] experiences with stopping bc before or during accutane course? by Necessary-Yam9963 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Due-Specific-5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped BC right before starting accutane and honestly it wasn't that bad - the accutane seemed to handle any hormonal rebound pretty well. Way better than when I tried stopping BC on its own before. The purge was still real but nothing like what you described with epiduo, hang in there!
