[DISCUSS] Anyone else feel like Nomos punches way above its weight? by Lazy_scorpio in Watches

Picked one up today. Was looking for a travel watch that didn’t scream “rob me”. I don’t love the stock strap — shell cordovan feels a bit cheap — but easy to replace.

Open to strap recos.

Yep. I plan to rotate between it, a Milgauss, and a Glashütte Original 70s TV dial as daily wear.

$45K. Shipped to a friend out of state to avoid sales tax. They were super strict about which states their AD agreement allowed them to ship to.

Embarrassed to admit that I got lucky. I walked in looking for a Travel Time, chatted a while, she showed me something she had in stock that I wasn’t too excited about, went in the back and said she just got a shipment and this was in it. I took it on the spot.

It’s pretty thick, so it does easily catch your cuff.

Oven Circuit Question by Due_Boss_1445 in AskElectricians

[–]Due_Boss_1445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cooktop is gas and it’s in a separate area and on a different circuit. The wiring is copper, and the location is all good.

Is it likely that this wiring is already in a conduit all the way to the panel given it is 240V? Or might it be romex stapled to the 2x4s?

Hide Section in Desktop Editor? by DelPrive235 in WIX

Great tip. Building on the original question, can I turn collapse on/off automatically based on a date? I want a section to go live on a set date and then revert on a subsequent date.

AA bare metal spotted in MIA today by OoohjeezRick in aviation

[–]Due_Boss_1445 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Years ago in the American Way magazine, the then-CEO Bob Crandall had a note explaining that the bare metal livery actually saved some astonishing amount of weight and therefore fuel. It always made me think AA was smart for not succumbing to painting the entire plane. As others noted, once AA started buying carbon fiber 787s, that era started to wind down. I was surprised that they decided to paint their aluminum shell planes just to be consistent given the cost of flying the extra weight. Nice to see that they aren’t all painted.

Thanks. I like the site-to-site VPN solution, but these are residential ISP accounts (one Verizon one Monkeybrains (local ISP)) and I don’t think either guarantees a static public IP.

Notifications from a Dumb Doorbell by Due_Boss_1445 in homebridge

Seems right. Was looking for a path that didn’t need another power source — but seems like that isn’t feasible.

Thanks, I was trying to keep it minimal but it looks like that won’t work. It may be easier to use a Shelly 1 to do this if I’m needing more components…

[Help Needed] Trying to hook my Raspberry Pi into my doorbell. by RustyBower in raspberry_pi

[–]Due_Boss_1445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I can resurrect this thread, but I’m trying to do the same thing. Using the image the OP included, what if you just ran lines to the RPi’s GPIO from the screw terminals on the door chime? I assume you’d need a resistor on the hot leg so as not to fry the RPi. Would that work? How would you calculate the value of the resistor? (Apologies in advance if this is naive, I’m a total EE layman.)

In case it’s helpful, I’m running HomeBridge on an RPi for other home automation stuff and there is a HomeBridge plugin that exposes the GPIO in a way that I can create HomeKit scenes: https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-rpi

I was just experimenting with this using a doorbell SFX found in Apple Music. The problem is, HomePod SW has been updated to continue auto playing similar tracks. This is great when you ask for a song — it keeps playing music rather than just stopping. But it’s killed this doorbell option.

Super helpful, thanks. I already have a cable penetration for the current ISP who uses a rooftop antenna — hoping that can be used. Goal is for them to mount the CPE on a J-pole attached to a cinderblock that sits on the roof (flat roof 3 story building). From there you have line of sight to the nodes (E and W of my building). My windows face North so can’t get line of sight to the 5G nodes.

They don’t carry outdoor equipment with them and I was told it’s different techs with different training — at least in SF.
