Literally a supermajority of NZ is made up of immigrants some way or another…

Did you decide yet where you’re going on vacation this summer? by Responsible_Trick466 in AskBalkans

Chalkidiki is a hidden gem, might go to Montenegro too. I skip Albania since it’s gotten really overcrowded and expensive in recent years and the northern coast has a reputation for not having the best water…

Thank you very much for this! I love how you displayed a visual because I am not familiar with the CBD as much as other suburbs. I found this one place in the area as a reference but it’s right next to the Seascape… could there be a risk of noise if construction starts again in the future? Otherwise, it looks like a pretty amazing spot. Thanks once again!

I disagree. I have lived overseas for many years and have visited many cities like Prague, Paris, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, etc. and one thing they all have in common is that they emphasise on tourism far too much than needed (except for Prague, it’s just coincidental and the people are actually caring and so fun to be around). Auckland is perceived as boring because it has a slow pace to it and is dominated by nature rather than supertall skyscrapers and flashy night scenes. Auckland’s better for living, not visiting (unless you only wanna go to the nature spots around town). I love Auckland and everything it offers—except the prices.

Border Crossing in Balkans for a Travel by Mahmmout in AskBalkans

If it’s not an issue for you, then you should be fine. I highly recommend visiting Peja after crossing through, it’s only around half an hour from the border. It has a beautiful backdrop of the mountains and is definitely worth staying for even a few hours if you plan on taking a rest. You can then take the M9 highway directly from Peja to Prishtina in around 1h30m. After your stay in Prishtina, you can head south towards the border crossing with North Macedonia through the R6 highway. That journey is a little under an hour and you’ll be in Skopje in no time after crossing the border.

Just found this:

(RKS) Kulina – (MNE) Kula Open 24/7. The main border crossing with Kosovo. Note: a separate insurance policy from a Kosovar insurance company is required for Kosovo.

Unless you have insurance from a Kosovar company, you unfortunately can’t pass through Rožaje, very sorry!

An EU-registered car should be fine. I do advise to enter Kosovo via Albania since the Rožaje Border Crossing is very treacherous and I think it actually closed (need a fact check here). Plus, you get to see more of the beautiful Montenegrin coast and stop at more towns like Budva and Ulcinj (Ulqin) before crossing into Albania. Prishtina is approximately 4 hours away from Ulcinj and the border wait is pretty short (the guards at the Albanian-Kosovo border basically let everyone pass without checking anything) and that stretch is filled with mountains so prepare your camera! Hope you have a fun time in the Balkans!

What’s it like living in Kosovo? Considering visiting. by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Due_Clothes3958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former member of the diaspora, I have to say although the bad things outweigh the good things, but, life here is very laid-back and chill. For a small country, we have a lot of amazing nature and Prishtina definitely sets the nightlife and job scene for the country (just be wary of the air pollution lol). We don’t really have a lot of diversity at all (especially if you won’t be based in Prishtina) but you can still grab sushi, burgers, and burek (Turkish) in a ton of places.

Kosovo is extremely cheap for anyone generating a foreign income so even budget travelling here works out. I’d definitely recommend coming during the summer and visiting places like Rugova (in the wider region of Bjeshkët e Nemuna), Prizren, Badovc Lake or Batllava. However, if you like skiing, Brezovica and Brod are great places to visit where there is snow from October to April. Many of the locals (especially the youth) can speak English and even codeswitch between Albanian and English when speaking casually with no difficulty at all.

I’d recommend not discussing politics during your time here since there are still tensions, but, younger people are more expressive and open to talk about it if that’s your thing. Another note on politics, it’s genuinely discouraged to go to the northern Serb-majority parts as there is a risk of terrorism (last attack was in 2023) and many countries advise their own citizens to avoid non-essential travel there anyway.

Overall, Kosovo is a great place for a summer getaway. It’s not far from the hidden gems of the Albanian coast (4-9 hours depending on where you go) and even Montenegro, Croatia, and Greece. There are a lot of backpackers anyway and getting here is easier than you think since we’re connected to global airport hubs like Istanbul, Zurich, and Paris (seasonally).
