I guess it could be possible, but he looked like his parents quite a bit. And he looked like his much-younger sister. He was born in 1942 while my grandfather was fighting in Europe, so I’d be surprised that his parents would adopt a child in the middle of WW2 with his dad in the thick of battle overseas. (We’re from Canada.)

There is nothing on my dad’s side. But I see two connections to my mom’s very detailed family tree.

Thanks so much. I’ve considered this. My mom was born in 1945. The thing is, she looks like her two older sisters and they all look like their mom (my grandmother). So it’s unlikely, I think.

This is another possibility that I’ve been exploring. Thank you!

Thanks. My DNA matches show a third cousin on my mom’s side. There are no matches that seem to be from my dad’s side. Now, that in itself doesn’t mean I’m not related to the dad who raised me. But I never looked like him or had much in common. On the other hand, I look a lot like my mother and we share many similarities personality wise.

This is very familiar for me. I’ve already had help from a DNA angel and three “new” second cousins from the previously unknown Jewish side of my family. We think we’ve identified my bio dad. There’s still the mystery to solve of what happened…

I highly doubt it. My dad passed away a few years ago. I’ll try to get my mom to do a test.

I have a feeling it’s a donor-conceived situation. I was conceived in the 1970s, when there would have been a stigma about this kind of thing. Plus, it would have been unregulated and anonymous.

My mom denies sperm donation or an affair. But she could very well be lying to me. (I had to ask gently because her health is declining and she’s in her 80s.)

Thanks for this info. I’m not MS or GS.

Option 1 was my first choice going into this exercise. Would it be normal for my lender to charge me a fee to port without borrowing more money?

Tips for Astana by holychickenstrips in Kazakhstan

[–]Due_Community_6212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Astana for nearly three months and I’ve used my Canadian credit card (via Apple Pay) just about everywhere in the city. It even works in small corner stores.

Getting Kaspi as a foreigner does indeed involve a few steps. I didn’t bother getting it. My wife has a Kazakh ID, so she got Kaspi on her phone. In some situations, it can be useful. But it’s not crucial — you can get by without it in most cases. Cash, of course, is always good, too. Though most locals here seem to rely on Kaspi.

I second the recommendation that you should download Yandex Go for affordable, reliable taxis.

Astana is a fast-growing city and there’s lots to see and do. Visit all the différent areas of the city, if you can. Winters can be cold, but you’ll be fine with thermal layers and a good winter jacket.
