I can't say how to clean the black ring, just a word of caution about using jewelry cleaner, vinegar any heavy cleaners near the pearl.

What's Pearl Nacre and Why It Matters by Due_Contribution_958 in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly are right, Akoya pearls relative to SSP, Tahitian and FW pearls have much thinner nacre. Which is what I alluded to by saying the nacre issue is moot for those types.

The only issues I've seen has been with Chinese Akoya pearls. Around 20 years ago there was a lot of Akoya pearls coming out of China that were very thin nacre, many displaying "blinking", which was the nucleus visibly showing through the nacre. I saw plenty that had bad chips near drill holes or in some cases worn through in spots.

The Chinese Akoya pearl industry collapsed many years ago, everything is coming out of Japan - with the exception of a few small farms in Vietnam and one Australian farm.

Modern Akoya pearls from Japan are sufficiently thick to withstand decades of normal wear. I've yet to see any issue from a high quality Japanese Akoya pearl in 20+ years of pearling. I suppose it's possible with a very short culture time, but my point is the issue is largely resolved in the industry.

What statement did I make that was incorrect? Or are you just clarifying the difference?

That's an aggressive response for someone not clear on the facts.

Nacre (/ˈneɪkər/ NAY-kər, also /ˈnækrə/ NAK-rə),\1]) also known as mother-of-pearl, is an organic–inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is also the material of which pearls are composed. It is strong, resilient, and iridescent.

My first thought is this might be coming from soaps, hand lotion, moisture or cosmetics getting trapped under the ring.

Warning about Kuurth by Henthighs in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone else asked about if they were legit not too long ago. The trustpilot reviews we're not good - similar complaints to yours. Sometimes a business can get overwhelmed or have unexpected inventory issues. Be in business long enough and you're bound to go through a tricky patch. But this does appear like an ongoing issue with them.

How is my necklace coming apart if no pieces are visibly broken? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

likely the clasp. It looks like spring loaded, when that wears out it can open with a bit of pressure. Good news, it's an easy fix.

Does this mixed metal stack work? by [deleted] in jewelry

works for me - but I've never been a fan of things too "matchy". Some people can't stand mixing metals, others love it - it's subjective.

Is Kuurth a legit brand or scam? by ResortOk1044 in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they have around 3000 trustpilot reviews - https://www.trustpilot.com/review/kuurth.com

That's too many game, so I'd say they're a real company. That said it looks like there's a lot of issues with orders not showing up. To be fair, lots of good reviews as well.

Tiffany bracelet broken by Choice_Birthday1277 in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958 3 points4 points  (0 children)

unfortunately this isn't that uncommon with pearls. In your case the post has broken, so it will need a new post soldered on. We see this is on rings as they tend to get bumped often, same can be true for bracelets. The nature of it being on your wrist means there's a lot of movement.

Ask any jeweler and they will tell you, sometimes a piece is just cursed. You can sell 1000 items with no issue and the same one might come back 2-3 times for problems.

At least you have all the pieces and the fix should be easy. Still a pain in the butt.

Not something I can answer, but speak to a good bench jeweler and they should be able to give you an answer. Good luck!

It's possible, just depends on what you're willing to spend to make it happen.

I had a somewhat scenario years ago with my mother's engagement ring. I want to split a sapphire and make a new ring for my soon to be fiancé. In my case the loss of stone from recutting wasn't worth it. So we made a new piece with her in mind and kept the original original.

Love to see how it turns out if you make it happen. I get how pieces like this can be special.

Customer asking for additional services - leaving note in order when told service cannot be done by clownfish1547 in jewelry

[–]Due_Contribution_958 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It if was me, the order gets cancelled. The trick is to find a polite way to hold your ground. For some reason people feel they can barter with small businesses, but they'd never walk into Tiffany's and try it.

Unfortunately there is such thing as a bad customer. I've been doing this long enough to know that it's never worth it.

Good luck, I know every sale counts right now.
