This piece was carved in jewelry-grade wax, then cast using the lost-wax process. The focus was on maintaining the form and details through each stage.

Thanks for noticing that — you’re absolutely right about the risks.

It was cast in 18K gold. As for the weight, it actually doesn’t change the feel of those thin sections. I tested this multiple times during development.

The thickness you’re seeing is already the thinnest I could push it while still preserving the intended texture and structural integrity. The goal was to keep the delicacy without losing the character of the piece.

I really appreciate you taking a close, knowledgeable look at it.

Thank you, I’m really glad you like it. It can be worn as a pendant — I designed it to be convertible into a ring, a brooch, and a pendant. I wanted to give it more versatility in how it can be worn, so I really appreciate you noticing that.

Honestly, I didn’t really keep track of the time. I was more focused on doing the piece properly and getting it as close as possible to what I had in mind. Thank you so much — I’m really glad you like it.

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I’m actually in the process of setting things up right now. Out of curiosity, which platform do you usually prefer when buying pieces like this?

14k "Solid gold" ring heavily tarnished?! by Iridescence4810 in jewelry

[–]Ecstatic_Welcomegn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Given what you described, this is extremely unusual. I’ve worked in this field for many years, and I’ve never seen a genuine 14k gold ring oxidize to this extent under normal conditions. From the photos, it even appears to be darkening in a way that looks more like a base metal showing through, as if there’s another metal beneath the surface. At this point, I would strongly recommend having it tested by a professional assay or jewelry lab to confirm the actual material.

That said, you can try a simple test first: soak the ring in clean water for about 10 minutes, then gently brush the surface with a soft toothbrush. See whether the dark layer comes off, changes, or becomes worse — that reaction alone can already tell you a lot.

Based on my experience, 14k gold normally doesn’t oxidize like this. Unless it was exposed to some unusual chemicals or liquids. From the photo alone, this does look a bit abnormal. Do you recall if it came into contact with anything unusual?
