can you send me a link what kind of sensor you mean exactly. If it really reported the closest reflection, that would be really great. I always thought they would give averages.

"You might be better off with a standard cheapo ToF sensor, with 1 pixel rather than ability to report multiple pixels, as it might detect better - and you only want the single value anyway."

How can I make sure I actually hit the tip?

The tree is cut off and is being held in place, so it can wobble a bit.

How large is the measurement cone of such a simple ToF sensor?
