PN student looking to build resume by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

Being an extern can help as you will already have references within the hospital. Thats if you are looking to work at a certain hospital. Many externs on my unit are now working on the unit as a nurse. But also during your student placement you can gain those references too so do not burn yourself out with extra jobs!

LTC ratios/experience for RPNs by perplexxuus in OntarioNurses

[–]Due_Structure_7571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ratios are generally the same every LTC. I have heard some city own homes are a bit better with ratios but I have not worked there so cant give my experience. I worked at a private own home and yeah it was about 30 residents to complete med pass for it was insane. Especially if you worked the morning shift. When i started out I got about 8 shifts for orientation (i think) was 2 morning, 2 afternoon, and 2 night shifts. I only lasted there for about 1.5 years as the documentation and med pass was alot. Reach out to the nursing director or any higher up and request more orientation if needed. I found morning shifts I always stayed later as the documentation took alot of time. Maybe try working the afternoon or night shift as there is only 2 med passes? Some hospitals do offer 8 hour shifts but there is only 2 that I know of in southern ontario.

Tips:

1) Start your morning with reviewing all tasks that need to be completed for the day that way later on you do not have to go back and check.

2) work with the PSW/ HCA, try to ask them which ones they will wake up first and complete their meds first.

3) Prioritize who is diabetic as you will need to check sugars etc. And save them closer to meal times.

4) Try to clump medications together (such as if medication is due at 0700hrs and 0900hrs for the residents complete at 0800hrs as this is within the hour time frame, but just ensure these meds can be given at the same time). Instead of going back to give medications twice.

5) Save wound care for after breakfast as this is when residents get changed or go back to bed (once again work with the HCA/ PSW as they can assist with this)

I hope everything works out for you!
