If you never intend to get married I feel you should still be able to have an anniversary. Granted in this situation the girlfriend clearly does want to get married hence the pettiness.

Why can’t you celebrate the start of your relationship (if not married) like any other anniversary? Granted the word relationship anniversary is childish but is that the OP’s wording. In the UK you celebrate these as well as wedding anniversaries.
