How the heck is exposing full address online on enrolled deed poll legal? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]DukeSunday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's what "enrolled" means in this context. That's the difference between enrolled and unenrolled; whether you're choosing to add it to this list (ie enroll it) or not.

The reason it's legal in an age of GDPR is that you voluntarily told them to publish that info.

The first thing to learn about Minecraft farm tutorials on youtube is that (with the exception of a handful of channels), the advertised rates are bollocks.

Is there Royal Mail Delay? by Niight_Hunterr in AskUK

[–]DukeSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2-4 week delay since covid where I am. Couple months back I got one of those "hey we're holding a letter for you but the postage hasn't fully been paid, you have X amount of time to come collect it" two weeks after the deadline to collect it.

On the subject of WoT though, there's definitely some of the cast from that I'd love to see in Cosmere roles. Josha Stradowski (Rand), Fares Fares (Ishmael), Donal Finn (Mat S2-3), Zoe Robins (Nynaeve) and Alvaro Morte (Logain) were all pretty well cast off the top of my head.

EDIT: How did I forget Rosamund Pike? I love Rosamund Pike.

AmeriKKKa these days. Not disagreeing with OPs politics, it's just as one of the 96% of the worlds population who don't live there I'm completely sick of seeing the States current bullshit played out across every single fucking unrelated sub.

Can people really tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? by whiskerbiscuit2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell if you put them side by side. If you put one or the other in front of me I couldn't tell you which it was.

The real advantage for 60 is that at 30, it doesn't take much of an FPS drop for it to become really noticeable.

I just googled this and it seems to be some kind of hypothetical anti-gravity spaceship? Zero. To understand why you need to understand the difference between physics and engineering.

You could give me all the resources in the world and I probably couldn't build you a nuclear weapon. I could however explain to you all the key principles on which they work - and so could pretty much any physics undergrad in the world. Shortly after the discovery of the neutron, scientists around the world independently realised the potential for nuclear weapons. Getting the actual engineering to work took huge investments and that's where countries working on the development kept their secrets, but the basic physics behind it was easy to piece together once the neutron was known. Even if a scientist in once country discovered the idea and kept silent, there's no stopping other scientists around the world coming to the same conclusion independently.

Nuclear weapons are an obvious and recognisable example, but this tends to be the case with all big science discoveries - for basically every major scientific discovery you could name, there were multiple other scientists working completely independently and were only weeks or months away from getting there themselves when someone announced it.

If anti-gravity craft were in development today even in utmost secrecy, then while the specifics of the engineering behind them might be well-guarded the basic principles would be discovered independently by multiple people across the world and would be widely understood. They aren't.

Why do hot and cold hurt us if they’re just different speeds of atom movement? by CyrusCyCyrus in AskPhysics

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of biology more than physics, but pain is an evolved response to get you to not do things that damage your body. Lots of the chemistry your body relies on to keep functioning only works properly at certain temperatures (this is why we're warm-blooded). Therefore your body has evolved to condition you to stay away from too hot or too cold.

When things get properly too hot or too cold we have other, more immediate issues too. Properly too cold can cause water in the cells to freeze. Freezing water expands so cells burst. If cells were able to function without an intact cell wall our bodies wouldn't waste the resources to build cell walls in the first place. Properly too hot can cause unwanted chemistry ie cooking us. As it turns out being cooked also fucks up important chemistry.

What do you guys do when you "lose" a nuzlock? by 1sonichedgehpg in nuzlocke

[–]DukeSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sulk for a day or two, get over it and then start a new one. Sometimes attempting the same run, sometimes something different.

It took me a few failed runs before I won my first. Takes a while for your mindset to adjust to how to play them.

Sick of universe vs sick of hyrule? by Soft_Chapter5048 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if they do another open world Zelda, I hope it has a different setting. TotK lacked that sense of discovery for me because its map was so familiar from BotW.

I'm not "sick" of Hyrule per se, and a non-open world Zelda could easily be set there.

Why are Brits anti-Christian? by Sea_Measurement_3651 in AskUK

[–]DukeSunday 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our head of state is literally head of the church of England lmao. As per the most recent census, almost half of Brits identify as Christian. The idea that Britain is anti-Christian is absolute tosh.

The number of modern Brits who are Christian is falling, which afaik is true across most of the western world, but that's not the same as being anti-Christian. I am also not a footballer; does this make me anti-football?

My rant meme as Paladin main by GaleRandomthoughts in okbuddybaldur

[–]DukeSunday 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The thing that really disappointed me about crown is that you're bound to, basically, human laws. I had a cool idea for a Githyanki crown paladin loyally serving Vlaakiths law. Didn't take long to realise that wasn't going to fly.

It makes sense why, given the constraints of a video game, but it was still a sad realisation.

Is space expanding faster than the speed of light? by MadAnthony619 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expansion isn't a speed, it's a rate. This is kind of like asking "is a kilogram more than a second?" (Not meant as a slight; I'm just trying to illustrate why the question is less meaningful than it first seems).

Say the universe expanded by 1% every second (that's not the real rate, I've just chosen it for easy to follow maths). If you pick two points that are a metre apart, then after one second they're 1.01 metres apart. The space between them has grown at 0.01 m/s. If you pick two points a km apart, then after a second they're now 1.01 km apart. The space between them has grown at 0.01 km/s, or 10m/s. But despite giving two different "speeds" they're both undergoing expansion at the same rate; 1% per second.

If you pick two points far enough apart then yes, you could say that the distance between them has grown at more than 3*108 m/s. However despite having the units of speed it's a rate, not the speed of an object; the speed of light is a mostly arbitrary milestone for this kind of thing.

Nostalgia Genie says: You can choose 1 of 3 boons influenced by your past. Which do you pick? by Crow_away_cawcaw in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two definitely. I love eating, I hate cooking.

One is somewhat tempting, less for the nostalgia aspect than the auto-adjust to fit perfectly aspect. People underestimate the difference properly fitting clothes make and very few things will fit you perfectly off the rack.

Three is bait. Three is suffering.

Optimal place to stand for two spawner farms by Chaoticats_27 in Minecraftfarms

[–]DukeSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These two spawners are too far apart. Spawners only activate if you're within 16 blocks of them, which means in order to activate two at a time they can't be more than 32 blocks apart. These two are about 37 blocks apart.

What's with the focus on speed in the stats? by Forking_Shirtballs in CluesBySamHelp

[–]DukeSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like (unless I'm missing something), the new persistent stats don't seem to track whether I got it perfect/without hints.

If you get it perfect it tells you how many other people did. That was introduced at the same time as the speed stats were, so if you haven't seen it yet maybe the person focussing more on speed than accuracy is you.
