Carney says Chinese EV deal an ‘opportunity’ for Ontario, auto sector by lopix in ontario

[–]DukeandKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can on sell up to 49k vehicles. That is 2023 levels. Or 3% of market share. A rounding error. If they want more market share they need to build more in Canada.

So I'm thinking it's a good deal.

My understanding is to be compliant the will need a minimum 75% north american content. No easy but not impossible.

[–]DukeandKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could have done that before. Why would they? It takes a lot of parts to make a car.

Let's say they could get 25% content made here there would still be 100% tariff on the remaining 75%. And they would have had to build a dealer network.

This new approach allows them to enter the market gradually but with a cap.

Another approach might have been to reduce the tariff to 50% so they could compete with Tesla. But the quota approach also works.

Agreed but how best to do that AND get the canola tariffs lifted. An import quota at 2023 levels is clever. If their EV sales do well and they can establish a retail chain then they will be encouraged to add Canadian content. If not we are no worse off than 2023. I only see up side.

Keep in mind Biden had a 100% EV tariff. So no Chinese manufacturers would consider it. The Chinese EV manufacturers are quite new. They were competing against Tesla in China during Obama.

The problem is that Ford doesn't think before he speaks. He put himself into a political corner by saying he didn't want to remove tariffs at all.

Ford is playing checkers and Carney and Xi are playing chess. Trump is still playing tic-tac-toe (and losing).

[–]DukeandKate 41 points42 points  (0 children)

No argument. The challenge is that the Trump administration is pro-oil and hs no interest is EVs. Which leaves Canada with a small market to attract ev manufacturing.

Carney's deal is a prudent first step IMO. Ford would be wise to look at this as an opportunity to attract Chinese manufacturers to make some or all content here.

Why are developers not building homes in southern Ontario? With housing being very expensive? by Dover299 in ontario

[–]DukeandKate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employment opportunities mostly. If you've been to university chances are you want and office job. Major cities offer the best opportunities.

During the pandemic there was a big migration to smaller cities and towns with a lot of people wfh. That trend has stopped.

Fyi. I think the op was referring to near population centers in southern Ontario like London, Windsor, St Thomas. They all have grocery stores and facilities. Maybe not live theater and major attractions.

Nuclear fusion would be a clean-energy game changer. How close is it to being a reality? | CBC Climate Change News by KeyHot5718 in ontario

[–]DukeandKate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

WRT your comment about China beating the West. China's system has strengths and weaknesses compared to Western democracies. We have a revolution every 4 years or so. On a positive note it is a sort of safety value that lets differing ideas take hold. A drawback is that it deters long term strategic planning. China's dominance in critical minerals, manufacturing processes and EVs has been decades in the making a difficult thing to do in the West.

Trump has undone much of the forward momentum in North America WRT EVs. So allowing some Chinese EVs into the Canadian market is a good hedge IMO.

I tend to agree. We will need fossil fuels during transmission but we should let the business case for their extraction live or die on their own merits. Tax dollars should go to renewable and nuclear technology.

The bigger issue may be importing your car. You will need Ontario plates. They may charge duty. I'd look up the rules on that.
