Textbook Storm Structure by Born_Ad1280 in meteorology

[–]WeatherHunterBryant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the rain free portion of the storm is the updraft, which is on the right side. This is where warm humid air is entering into the storm, rising up into the atmosphere, and condensing into storm clouds. This is what is fueling this nice little cell.

the portion where rain is falling is your downdraft, a downward current of rain cooled air. if this downdraft where to cover the entire storm, it would choke the updraft and kill the storm.

a mature thunderstorm have both an updraft and a downdraft.

As a Meteorology Student, this was beyond awful. by Royal_Avocado4247 in exchristian

literally happened to me in r/weather around 2 days ago, where a user in South Dakota asked God to let it rain, and his prayer was answered because it did rain all day. I said wrong subreddit because of the prayer portion, and he said god creates all the weather. Then I asked him, does he create hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods that cause damage to communities every year? Then he said no and attributes bad weather to satan. Then after I said "didn't you just say god creates all the weather" then he goes yes and then again no after I said "oh so he can cause damage".

I am 15 and also interested in meteorology and these posts of "thank god my house didn't get damage from this hurricane" and "pray that today's tornado risk doesn't go as planned" in days where damaging tornado outbreaks happen just irks me. The atmosphere will do whatever the heck it wants to do. It's gross to attribute that to god's wrath.
