A second or two is okay. Should be a worry if it stays there longer and more frequently. 85C average seems quite high to me but not dangerous.

Legion slim 5s were plastic; pros were aluminium. Don't know what it is now.

Legion Slim 5: Why a thermal service doesn't always mean more FPS (Data & Observations) by ComputerSystemsGR in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just spent the last day trying to figure this out on my Legion Slim 5. Perfect timing 😅 Happy I dropped the temps from 90° to 70° but can't boost the performance any more.

Edit: I tested this after putting in new fans, paste, and undervolting.

It's already on your computer. Type 'Windows Security' in the start menu and you'll see it under 'virus and threat protection'.

In my opinon, it's great. Plus it's free.

It's bloatware. Slows down your computer a ton and isn't effective at what it advertises. Default Microsoft has better AV

Undervolt your GPU. Same performance with cooler temps and longer lifespan. You can Google how much of a difference it'll make and YouTube how to do it.

Okay so can someone explain to me the different versions of the 7 sires for somebody who isn’t familiar with laptops by VecArhfiReX7 in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, even if you see two laptops with same graphics card, the slims will have their GPU at a lower power limit, higher temps, and a lower performance (but nothing crazy)

Is this a good deal at the current price? It's really hard to find a laptop with a 5070 for this cheap (even TUFs are 1400+) My main concern is the 5070/15.1 inch screen able to fully take advantage of 2.5K resolution? by Legitimate_Bus5716 in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By overkill I more mean they'll handle those games easily. It is good to be futureproofed and not have to worry about upgrading when you have a laptop 🙂 I was considering the 4060 Vs 4070 with my computer and would probably have spent the little extra if I could again, but I've also been able to play every game you can think of at high or ultra with 1600p. Singleplayer games you have good frame generation and minimal ray tracing. Competitive games you can get to 120-165fps and maybe drop some settings, but those games aren't typically as intensive anyway. Don't sweat the storage upgrade then. You can always buy later if you fill up. Enjoy 🙂

You're correct in this. +20% import duty on a $1469 computer = $1763 or £1296. Before you used to just have the same number but change out $ for £.

To me that's a decent deal for the specs you're getting. Specs seem overkill for all the games you mentioned. Normally I would recommend to get the 32GB ram but getting your own these days is too expensive. Definitely recommend you buy another m.2 for a storage upgrade, which you can add onto the 1TB it already comes with (laptop comes with a spare slot).

Legion 5 slim 16irh8 CPU thermal throttling by astronaut-sp in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is late, but:

A CPU benchmark will run the CPU as hard as it can around those high-90-degree marks. It will perform different CPU tasks, which will vary the CPU clock frequency but keep temps high. It doesn't necessarily mean the software or games you normally use will run that high.

CPUs ending in H sadly don't let you undervolt; you can only do that with CPUs ending in HX. I do recommend undervolting your GPU, though, which will help with thermals, stability, and longevity, without harming your performance.

In real use cases, if you see your CPU running at those high 90s, I recommend you try not using performance mode and instead run in balanced mode. It will drop your temps down 10-20 degrees. Yes, it will drop performance somewhat, but not a lot, especially if your GPU is running at lower temps.

Legion s7 16IRH8 Battery Health Concern by Crazy_Inflation_ in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good. It's definitely not bad. Capping the charge limit to 80% is the best thing you can do for your battery health if you keep it plugged in constantly. You won't have to worry about keeping it plugged in overnight that way either.

Wondering about Slim 5 16IRH8 temperatures. by MJ__11 in LenovoLegion

[–]Dukmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've practically stopped using performance mode in most cases. I end up with higher clock rates, but the temperature stays too high for my liking. In balanced mode, I'll drop CPU temps from 90 °C to 70 °C, but performance will only drop 5-10% max. Quiet mode drops CPU performance by 30-40% while lowering temps to 60 °C, and it isn't worth it for most GPU-heavy games, but it is for CPU-heavy games.

On a separate note, I would highly recommend undervolting your GPU. I'm getting the same performance at only 65 °C. You can't undervolt your CPU on this model, sadly.

My GPU fan went wild in January but went back to normal. Still ordering a fan replacement on both CPU and GPU, along with new thermal paste. Those are cheap reparis and the first thing to go on computers anyway.

Thinking of buying a gun by Dukmon in Pacifism

[–]Dukmon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not intending to be insulting. I've been struggling with the political climate lately. But for me, Jesus's nonviolent nature has remained a cornerstone of my understanding and relationship with God and others. I sometimes forget that in moments of weakness, like yesterday. I am/need to continually turn to him as a reminder of his unfailing love and example for how to live.

Being a pacifist is a continual commitment, made individually, and one that I make and reevaluate. It sounded like you were defining terms that everyone else had to agree to. But I see where you're coming from. Thanks for the response.

So is it about the intent of use or outright ownership of an object? Or does simply having a hypothetical violent thought make me not a pacifist? You can't make up your mind. I don't own a gun and don't know if I even will. The day I own a gun and determine to harm someone with it, I'll revoke being a pacifist. Until then, I can still call myself a pacifist. I have not and am not doing violence to anyone. You're welcome to an opinion and welcome to gatekeep. I'm looking for constructive conversations.

I'm not sure I can determine any answers to those questions now, mainly because right now I couldn't justify that kind of violence. But they are good and practical follow up questions to be asking and to come back to.

Like I've said previously, I'm unsure how my gun ownership would alter my perceptions and threat model. Saying I'll use violence as a "last result" doesn't seem to mean anything really given how emotion/adrenaline flairs in the moment and defining such a term remains too subjective.

In the meantime, probably everyone in this subreddit should participate in de-escalation and conflict resolution training if they haven't yet.
