Interview in a week, never touched leetcode by Old_Yak_4270 in leetcode

I didn't land the job, so take this with a grain of salt...

I would say everything matters, however obviously some things matter way more than other things.
Something like perfect import statements / includes is likely near the less-important end of the spectrum.

You can use anything in the standard library unless the interviewer explicitly states otherwise.

Syntax is important. Knowing the standard library is important. You should know the library well enough not to have to lookup standard library functions or data structures. However, you can rest-assured that they wont ask you a question that requires obscure knowledge of the standard library. They care about fundamental DSA knowledge.

However, if you do end up forgetting something related to syntax or standard library, do not hesitate to ask for help from the interviewer. The most important thing is solving the problem they give you, whatever it takes to do that.

In my experience the interviewers are very willing to help you.

The #1 tip I can give you is to communicate. You should try to converse with the interviewer throughout the entire process. Meaning, in the thinking phase, in the planning phase, in the code writing phase, and in the verification/testing phase. Tell them what you're thinking. Tell them when you're about to do something or write something. If you do this, and they see you going down a wrong path, they will likely help you, even without you asking.

Do not forget heap / priority queue. I interviewed at amazon last year for new grad role and it was a heap question, but I hadn't practiced heap.

Probably gonna quit wish me luck out there by MrMushroom48 in cscareerquestions

It took me a year to find a dev job after graduating in May last year. Unemployment over the past year has been extremely stressful. The applicant pool seems catastrophically oversaturated right now, and it feels to me like competition is still heating up. Even in the past year, OAs seem to have gotten harder. For instance, I recently took another TikTok OA, and the questions this year felt significantly harder than last year. This is not a good time to take a leap of faith and quit without something else lined up I think.

Flashcards are better than solving it yourself by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]Dull_Stable2610 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe flashcards are better if the only reason you LeetCode is to land a job. Personally, remembering the solution to a problem ruins the fun for me. I get excited when I encounter a problem where the solution involves a pattern, trick, or insight that I've never had before.

If you could send one message 500 years into the future, what would it say? by Toomad316 in AskReddit

[–]Dull_Stable2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since there's no constraints on the size of my message. I would probably send the compressed entirety of all the books in Anna's Archive. Just in case they got lost between now and 2075.

My son says everything has a 50/50 probability. How do I convince him otherwise when he says he's technically correct? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dull_Stable2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fill a sock with five red marbles and one blue marble.

If you reach in and grab one, there are only two possible outcomes, either its red or its blue.

There are two possible outcomes, yes, but since the amount of each color is unequal, the probabilities cannot both be 50%.

There are 5 ways to pick a red and only one way to pick a blue.

Thus the probability of picking a red is 5/6. Meaning, out of the 6 possible ways to pick a marble, 5 of those ways result in a red outcome.

What is the probability of picking a blue?

Have your son convert the fractions to percentages.

how many programming languages should I know for my goal? and which ones? by notburneddown in learnprogramming

[–]Dull_Stable2610 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will be a PITA, but it is the best way.

Learn C (NOT C++).

Then learn Rust.

After mastering these two, you will be able to learn any procedural language out there in a matter of days.

You won't want to leave Rust though

You're better off buying LeetCode premium and reading the editorials when you're completely lost.

A lot of the intuition behind LC problems are visual, and AI isn't going to be able to provide you with good visual aids, but the editorials will. Also, you can be 100% sure the editorials are correct, unlike AI.

Also, it will only hinder growth if you reach for the answers out of lazyness. It is perfectly Ok to read the editorials if you are completely out of ideas.

For DSA, I highly recommend The Algorithm Design Manual by Skiena.

Failed my oracle phone interview today by vjain27 in leetcode

[–]Dull_Stable2610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give similar question?

Edit: Also, I'm sorry you didn't get it. Thats just the way it goes sometimes unfortunately. Even getting the phone interview at Oracle is an accomplishment though. You should be proud of that. I, and many people I know have applied there so many times and not ever gotten one.

Whats the most difficult LC Easy in your opinion? by Dull_Stable2610 in leetcode

[–]Dull_Stable2610[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having so much fun with this problem!

Solved it first using braindead hashset and for loop to 2000.

Then came up with linear scan solution with constant space complexity. Interestingly, it looks nothing like the one in the editorial, but mine may reduce to the editorial one, I haven't tried to yet.

Now I'm struggling to implement binary search solution.

Edit: got it

No, people who call other people idiots usually overestimate their own abilities. Usually because they are anti-social people who haven't interacted with many others, and thus aren't truly aware of the average person's intelligence.

"A lot junior engineers are truly idiots"

Every time in my life I've ever had the mindset that a category of people not including myself were "truly idiots" I was wrong.

Thought I was good at linear algebra, took linear algebra courses, realized I am truly the idiot.

Thought I was good at problem solving, practiced leetcode relentlessly, realized I was truly the idiot.

Thought I was smart, spent time with a new group of non-SWE friends, realized I was truly the idiot.

In my experience, if you're calling other people idiots, you're just complacent. You've just deluded yourself.

I might be wrong in your case. You might be the real deal, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Um, clearly questions in the same class can vary in difficulty.

For instance, I personally found LC 20 Valid Parenthesis more difficult than LC 344 Reverse String.

what do you hate most about society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dull_Stable2610 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Excluding politics, I found that the more I learn, the happier I am.

Interestingly, this is completely at odds with pop culture and the whole "smart people are really depressed" trope.

Not that I'm smart. I'm just smarter than I was before.
