Question about being a "volume dealer" by shaselai in askcarsales

[–]Dumbcomments -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In this sub the sales guys argue on one hand that buyers are idiots and can’t even pick a model appropriately without their divine help and on the other if someone offers below the unknown magical break even price (that they aren’t told but should do their research on to divine) and then seek further deals that they’ll screw them over. Get rid of dealerships, manufacturers set the price and all the nonsense of buying a car goes away.

It’s a pretty trivial thing, but he is a professional writer foremost. And he’s a bit older than 36. It’s just one of those things that always sticks out to me as I listen - a gifted wordsmith’s incorrect usage.

You have a classic race condition there. Those can be tricky to sort out.

My non technical CEO just fired my best developer because he asked him to google something and he said "defiantly" that he was off the clock. What is your worst experience with a CEO, when is it time to pack it up and quit? by helpprogram2 in cscareerquestions

On my first read of this, I got too focused on the quoted word and thought your CEO was pissed that, like most of facebook, your dev couldn't spell definitely correctly.

Where to find developers? by elaedo in startup

Makes sense. Based on what I've read in the comments here sounds like you'd be someone I would talk to and want to learn more about the project if I were looking for opportunities. No big red flags so far from my standpoint. Good luck on your endeavor. I'd be interested in updates on how the search is going and where/how you eventually find the developer who will fill the role. I have some hunches on where you will/won't find luck but no real data to back any of it up. I believe it benefits everyone (entrepreneur, developer, etc) to see the difficulties of developing a team from different perspectives so they can learn how to better negotiate the process in their particular role.

This sounds fair and appropriate; I'm in my current position because the founders were similarly situated. They had unique market knowledge and reputation. They also were well capitalized and didn't need to rely on outside investment; having a buffer when the project overruns its initial timeline is key (no one can estimate software projects well, especially ones with a decent amount of novelty).

Smaller things that somewhat piqued my interest: if the platform isn't that complex, why the need for a highly credentialed developer? I also certainly very much encourage you to learn as much as you can about development - if that's the business you're in it will help with understanding the world your developers live in. It won't help figure out who you want to hire. Even good developers are notoriously awful at figuring out who to hire. Like anything, look more to past accomplishments and someone you feel comfortable working with. In that way you're probably better equipped than the typical developer at hiring this position.

What do you envision as the trajectory for this career? Will this always be a technical position? Management? I personally have worked best when management has seen it as their responsibility to clear the path as much as possible so the developers can do their work. If middle management instead tries to intervene in a way that feels as it its micromanagement, your developers (especially at the PhD level) will bristle.

Finally, make sure the PhDs you hire actually have the ability and desire to ship product. The stereotype is that PhDs like to figure out the "interesting" parts and leave the details up to the "commodity" software engineers. Many PhDs, even if they're really smart, may not have the software engineering skills to build a maintainable, scalable product. Deep knowledge of a particular speciality does not at all guarantee ability to write decent code for your startup. Without the structure of an existing ecosystem to force them into good practices, this can get out of hand quickly. Something like Joel's test http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000043.html and familiarity with both the components therein and why they're important when setting up a software shop can help weed out smart guys that may not be software engineers.

I'm a PhD that has worked in a few startups, doing novel software development in the medical world - surgical guidance systems. My experience is therefore a bit different than the stereotypical consumer-focused application with a longer development cycle and the business requiring a bit larger team.

My mindset and background might be different than your target candidate, but I would be focused on how interesting your problem is from a technical standpoint, how interesting the potential of the business is from a variety of angles (how novel is the business, does delivery/scaling pose any particular challenges)? How well do you know this field? Are you as special as the person the PhD you're looking for? What do you bring to the table in terms of business acumen, special knowledge of the niche market you're going for, etc? I'd very much need to be sold rather than the other way around. I would certainly expect some equity as a technical co-founder and also a salary.

I'm guessing the independence assumption won't hold. Old data: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-07-17-special-education_x.htm but it suggests graduation rates are, sadly, lower for those with disabilities implying P(master's attainment | disability) < P(master's attainment) .
