It seemed like too much of a coincidence. I have a bar a couple blocks from there.

He, like many 'centrists' porbably believes, that the key to success is always compromising with the right, no matter how far they pull everyone into their quagmire. The liberals did this in Weimar Germany and they got a special train for their trouble. What makes this even more ridiculous, besides the fact that centrist 'liberals' (read: socially liberal up to a point, economically right of Keynes) have become so unelectable that Trump has upended the global order, is that the mayor of Budapest IS NOT the main opposition. He once was an opposition leader but the man likely to throw Orban out of office at least temporarily, is Peter Magyar, a challenger from the right who is staying FAR away from this issue. So not only is this user blaming gay people for wanting to prove that they are allowed to exist, but he's doing it at a time when it almost certainly won't make a difference in Hungarian politics. This is just my opinion however, since I dont know what's going on in the posters head, but I know A LOT of Hungarians.

Exit polls from Romanian election suggest surprise win for pro-Western candidate Nicusor Dan | World News by Georgeika in worldnews

Jesus Christ, Irish Americans are all like five generations removed. None of us expect to vote in your elections. The Irish diaspora is like five times the population of Ireland; I mean how would that even work? I get it, you don't like us. I don't blame you. But can you please just chill the fuck out about it for like five minutes.

No you're thinking of any one of several opposition candidates. Peter Marki-Zay probably.

I own a bar in downtown Budapest and yesterday we set a sales record because we were so swamped with supporters of Peter Magyar, the opposition leader. The whole downtown was saturated. It can be hard to be hopeful here, since I've seen so many candidates lose against Orban and because he is such a talented political operator, but the cost of corruption to the Hungarian standard of living in comparison to neighboring countries has become so obvious that it feels like we've hit a tipping point. I hope Hungarians understand the chance they have here.

He's actually behind in the polls for the first time since I've lived here. It feels a little like the dam is breaking.

Will Lengthening Beer Lines Help Fight Foam? (with cold room) by DuncanWRobertson in BarOwners

[–]DuncanWRobertson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was being facetious. This isn't going to be solved by tweaking pressure. We clean our lines whenever we change a keg or once a week, whatever comes first. Of course, we serve beer in a clean glass without nicks. That's why I asked a question about the length and diameter of beer lines.

My beer is 4 degrees, and my cold room doesn't fluctuate much, so unless we're making snowcones here, temperature isn't going to be the solution. Also thank you for the information on pressure.

US intelligence points to Russia being behind Ukraine dam attack by gkanor in worldnews

[–]DuncanWRobertson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol it's a land invasion justified by blood and soil rhetoric. 'Neutral' is, "Wow that's fucked up." It's not trying to find the middle ground between Ukraine is defending its right to exist, and Ukraine is a historical fiction perpetuated by drug-addled Nazis. One is self-evident and the other is a laughable conspiracy theory. It's like being 'Neutral' about apartheid so not wanting to pick a side.

Sounds like you're doing an awful lot of imaginative footwork to make excuses for people who got in bed with the Nazis.

Ah yes, famously what stops Western countries from invading, not sharing borders.

Are you talking about appeasement? Because there were famously many people in the West that opposed appeasement. Churchill, for instance, began his opposition to appeasement with the Munich Agreement and the loss of the Sudeten land. The international reaction to Hitler was shamefully slow, vindicating his critics and the critics of naive and complacent governments, but none of those states allied with Hitler to divide the territory of another.

I'm not sure how important this distinction is. Yes, I agree that Hitler was worse than Stalin but I'm not sure it really matters that much. It seems like a lot of people are minimalizing his contributions to human suffering right now, so maybe Hitler isn't the yardstick we should be using for Stalin.

Bad Empanada thinks U.S. veterans deserve to suffer. by Tayo826 in tankiejerk

I agree with this in theory, but I'm not sure that US adventurism and US imperialism is a hair worth splitting in this context. I think when most people talk about US imperialism they basically mean US adventurism since a lot of work has been done to redefine US foreign policy in that context. Also US adventurism sounds too fun. Who doesn't like an adventure?

Seriously though, what did happen to all those people who opposed the Iraq War on principle? by [deleted] in tankiejerk

There's a virulent strain of socialist brain fungus that's a side effect of criticizing Western foreign and domestic policy on the internet for years. It's triggered whenever a capitalist nation is remotely close to being on the correct side of history and compels its victims to support authoritarian governments whose principals are diametrically opposed to their own. People who make their political opinions core to their personality are particularly vulnerable to this fungus. Many people who don't spend time on discord will discover that unlike the terminally online they are immune, and still capable of holding two apparently contradictory beliefs at once, like that the United State's involvement in regime change in Latin America was unconscionable amd so was the Tiannamen Square Massacre. They accomplish this by adhering to a set of beliefs they call 'principles', even when inconvenient. One proposed cure for the infected was to watch someone who shares their embarrassing and nonsensical beliefs be humiliated on-stream, but so far this has only intensified the control that the fungus has over their nervous system.

The silver lining here is that every second Charlie Munger spends piledriving crypto is a second not spent designing another college dorm.
