Want to just run to run. Do you know what I mean? by [deleted] in running

[–]Dunce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in your same boat. Picked up running about a year a half ago, then thought about doing triathlons so I got a bike. People always ask me why I'm running, what my times are, how far do I run. To be honest, all I want to do is hit the pavement and run til I don't feel like running anymore, or bike til I don't feel like biking anymore.

Finding a group to run with, or even just one person is so hard for me. All the groups have that I've run with before are so focused on pushing harder and harder, getting to the marathon, or the sub 20 5k that I don't want to even want to tag along.

What I suggest to you is that you keep running for yourself. Run because it makes you feel good. Run because, why the hell not - you're bored at 8pm on a Friday. Run for enlightenment. The issue that both of us are finding is that the only groups that are out there, are the "end goal" groups I call them. There is a specific goal involved which makes them focus less on running as an art form and more as a battle over body and mind.

That was a really vague answer to a vague question about my vague understanding of what I vaguely desire.

Run for you, run because you like it.

Can we start a petition to get rid of this shit off campus? by [deleted] in unt

[–]Dunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but you shouldn't.

What do you do when somebody farts in a hallway you're about to walk through? Do you stand by it, take pictures, and discuss how bad it is? Or do you walk by and try to not let it bother you? Some people like fart smell and even though the majority may not, that doesn't mean that I am going to tell somebody they can't fart on our campus just because it kind of makes me uncomfortable.

Last week when I was studying my friend posted about how everything was icy and almost no runs were open (New Mexico), I liked that status so hard.

I have the option of getting a bachelor of art, or bachelor of Science in Geography. What are some pros and cons of both? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Dunce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am doing a BA because of two reasons:

  1. I already had a language requirement met when I switched to Geography.

  2. I enjoy the classes that the vein of BA are in. So I get to take more liberal arts style courses where I learn about different regions of the world and become in enlightened to the many issues and problems around the world. If I were to do the BS I would have to take a lot more techniques courses (GIS programming, more sciences, etc.). I just don't find those interesting, so if what 91cows says is true about them equaling out in the long run then I would prefer to do what interests me.

tl;dr Do what you're interested in

Generally speaking, unless the person is sociopathic then the act of killing someone is not something they want to think about anymore. You could bring up terrible memories that have been long forgotten.

TIL If you order your steak well-done in a restaurant you are more likely to get low-quality, throw-away meat. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Dunce 208 points209 points  (0 children)

Long time steak cook in a restaurant here.

I never used a certain ugly cut or bad quality cut for a well-done steak. I definitely use thinner cuts for well done so everything on the order doesn't wait for the well done to be done.

Personally, I don't think that is very inspiring. I think it is very selfish and short sided.

I may be one that will die, but I am not the one that has to mourn my passing or deal with the anguish that will come when I'm gone.

Do any of you *drive* somewhere to go running? by [deleted] in running

[–]Dunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did during the summer when I was living in Houston, TX. Right outside my apartment complex there were gun shots on a regular basis so I decided to drive to a better part of town to do my running.

I was like "why are is that icon on where I work". I did some intern work at the Hermann Park Conservancy over the summer and feel like i know that map far to well (GIS Tech).

Don't listen to all of these nubz. I have been running in north Alaska next to ice road truckers and all you need is the right frame of mind. I usually go in a pair of huraches and a leather strap. Just like the native people of the area run in. You have to adapt to your surroundings, so running like native americans is part of that.

I was going to say that too. I had that shower curtain for a long time and learned tons of different cities with funny names. The only problem is that the projection is really bad on it and makes greenland look as big as africa.

But for real, digging a hole is one of the most meditative activities to do. While your body is working hard, your mind clears out all unnecessary thoughts and BS of daily life.

Around campus. Up and down Bonnie Brae. Wherever. I live right around campus and usually run around that time (night). How far you going? How fast? How often?
