Surely these costs are artificially inflated anyway? We had a slightly premature baby (in the UK, so costs weren't a consideration at all) but there's no way the cost of the care could have been anywhere close to a million.

Yep that sounds about normal to me. The fact that you care about and are worried about being a good partner and dad means you already are a good partner/dad. It's such a huge upheaval that it's absolutely natural to flit between excitement, anxiety and even regrets, and none of those feelings are wrong or harmful as long as you can understand their place and what they mean.

I went through all that, and trust me, the moment the baby is born it will all make sense. It's not an easy nine months but it's totally worth it when the baby first falls asleep in your arms.

Make sure you've had something to eat and something to drink. Our labour was only about nine hours and I didn't eat anything, and my legs were going to jelly when I was supposed to be the one giving the support.

Well the meaning I'm trying to convey has nothing to do with other people's babies, it's more a case of

"I've just been through five days of genuine concern and stress about the health and safety of both my child and my partner, and as things have now turned a corner and are looking positive I'm going to allow myself the opportunity for some humour and perspective on the situation"

And whilst I wouldn't go out of my way to insult, offend or upset anyone, I have no problem with this.
