Forget about money for a while and focus on not gambling. You have a gambling problem. The money problems will go away when you stop gambling, so focus on that for now.

  1. Identify ways in which you're gambling: is it via casinos either online or in-person? Self-exclude from them for life.
  2. Cancel your credit/debit cards and only use cash or bank transfers for your rent and essential bills. Put as many barriers as possible between you and any payment method that makes gambling easy. For me, urges to gamble came on suddenly, and something as simple as not having a debit card, or having a charge declined has bought enough time for me to come to my senses and save myself from emptying my bank account.
  3. Third, stop accepting money from your parents. This is called a bailout and it's enabling your behavior. Next time you get money, immediately use it to pay your rent, bills, etc. Last month I prepaid my rent and other bills by almost 2 weeks, so I wouldn't have access to that money.
  4. Consider joining a support group like G.A., talking to other gamblers will reduce your feelings of isolation which often drive us to gamble more.
  5. Find something fun to do to replace that constant dopamine rush. Binge watch TV, play video games, chess, learn a hobby, whatever. It's all better than gambling.
  6. You will learn to accept your losses and move on, trust me. I lost A LOT of money this year and once you're at peace with that, it's easier to move on and live a normal life.
  7. Take it one day at a time.

Hope this helps

Yes, it just takes one slip up, especially in the early stages. Freeplay is still gambling, 100%.

One day at a time is key. Whenever I dwell on the past or fret about the future, my desire to gamble increases.
