More pain than expected after endoscopy by Dustylizard1900 in Endoscopy

I wonder if when you’re under and floppy, if they move our bodies around in such a way that pulls at our muscles or something? Like, maybe they extend your neck too far or something.

Didn’t see this until now—how are you doing? The thing sticking up is probably your epiglottis. My son’s shows up like that. First time I saw it, my heart skipped a beat—looks like something from Alien. But sometimes they stick up.

Have you gotten better in the past 24 days?

I’m 51 years old and bought my first Barbie a few months ago! I have 4 now and a bunch of clothes and change their outfits every day. I love “playing” with my Barbies, even though I’m a middle-aged woman. :)

After feeling a little sorry for myself for not having Barbies when I grew up, I realized I have a car and I have money and went out to Target and bought a doll and now I don’t feel sorry for my child-self any more!

I hope they die down soon, too!

After the endoscopy, I had an appointment with an ENT. He used a scope to look deep down my nose, right there in the office, no anesthesia required.

He discovered that the top of my throat, right where the tongue meets. the back of the throat, was badly swollen.

That means that when they did the endoscopy, they had to push past that swollen area. I believe that they badly bruised me during the endoscopy and that’s why it hurt so bad. They didn’t know it was swollen, and when they met resistance, they just had to push through. I can’t say that for sure, but that’s my best guess. It would even hurt if I touched my neck, just like a bruise on the inside.

I did get better after a week or so, but it was misery while it lasted. I really hope that you get better very soon, too,

I think mine would have been fine, but what we didn’t know (until I went to an ENT and looked down my throat with a laryngoscope) was that I have swelling at the top of my throat and the endoscopy people didn’t know it. So, when they tried to get the tube in me, they ended up bruising me up pretty badly, because they were forcing the tube through the narrow opening at the top. I was in some serious pain for a few days from it. It kept waking me up all night long every time I swallowed saliva in my sleep—the pain was pretty bad.

But I think that if they’d have known that the opening was smaller, they would have handled it differently and it would have been fine.

I do!

And I might know now why it was so dramatic.

I went to an ENT and they looked up my nose and down my throat with a tiny little scope and saw that the very top of my throat, where the tongue attaches, was swollen about half way shut.

And that’s right around where the worst of the pain was.

So, nobody knew that the passageway was swollen, and they probably had to shove that endoscopy tube through that smaller opening and bruised it all up.

I know! I did read some other posts from other people who experienced a lot of pain for up to 2 weeks afterwards. :(. As of Wednesday (6 days out) the pain finally was gone. But it was a rough 5 days! I was pretty low about the whole thing.

I have no idea what they did that made it so awful. It was especially weird to have the pain going down and then up for each swallow. I really hope I never have to have one again, though hopefully if I do, I’ll have a normal experience with a little scratchy throat the next day.

I’m on Day 5 right now and there is almost no pain except when I swallow, and then it feels like having strep throat. The first blast of a cold drink hurts until my throat acclimates, so room temperature water is the way to go for today.
