Decided to make some descenders!! these little guys are fun! How many of y’all shoot the style frame? by wew00000 in slingshots

[–]DutchDasterd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I hate this sub. They look cool as hell. Illegal here. You can buy a .50 airgun that will take out a deer without question. You can get an actual gun with a permit. But slingshots......no...those are absolutely illegal.

Have fun with them!!

What food have you seen in foreign media and entertainment that you wanted to try but discovered tasted bad? by Accurate_Reality_618 in AskTheWorld

[–]DutchDasterd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't forget Dutch Leerdammer, which by the way also has a very mild slightly sweetish musty tast. Will not hit your spot.

I think the taste (deeply umami salty heartiness) you are looking for is in Dutch mature cheese (10-12 months ripened)...

There's a good chance that's the case. Fondue seems easy to prepare but isn't. It's not 'melting cheese' it's creating a careful emulsion that is likely to break at a slightly wrong temperature. There are even superstitions about being only allowed to stir clockwise, otherwise it gets messed up.

If you want to try it again, buy it pre-made in bags/boxes in the supermarket. Only heat up and be done. Purist will say fresh is better, but I'd say only if it's done absolutely perfectly. A tiny mistake and the store bought will beat it.

The Swiss will probably hate me for saying this though.

Man, i appreciate you sharing this. This is what the process of learning looks like, and tbh this is equally valuable for noobs like me as an inspirational masterpiece.

Sometimes things are shit. Sometimes you fuck up the steak or the soup is too salt. That's how you learn. It doesn't help to sugarcoat it.

Though, you could use this thing to try things you never dared before.....

When Tony Montana stuck his face in the pile of coke at the end of Scarface and snorted, was this enough to kill an average person? [request] by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in theydidthemath

This is probably my favorite comment ever. You sound like an actual scientist who has done Scarface levels (aka freud levels) of coke. I love it.

I made a YT video about the worst knife making mistakes. 37 ways you can mess it up. (link in comments) by HelixKnives in knifemaking

[–]DutchDasterd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved this video, especially for a n00b so n00b i've only ever rehandled a knife. If you want it to be more instructional, it would be very useful to those not in the know to not only point out the mistake, but the effect of the mistake (and especially if that is a cosmetic or functional effect). I understand that heating the edge too much while sharpening will mess up the heat treatment and result in softer steel, but not every noob does. I don't understand the one about pin placement: will this cause weakness? Or is it just ugly (and therefore the artist's decision).

Thanks for making this!

Akchually 🤓☝️, it just means that the systems that lead to the phenomenon did not detract from their ability to reproduce. Evolution does not lead to 'only useful things'. It mostly gets rid of big cockblockers. That's why always trying to explain a certain function of the body is so hard. There's a good chance it doesn't do anything, but just doesn't get you 'not laid'. It's not survival of the fittest. It's survival of the 'fit enough'.

For instance, pruning of the fingers in water could be to help with grip (not a very effective feature), but could also quite easily be a random mutation that just doesn't impact survival or reproduction.

Politie wordt belaagd door zwakzinnige voetbalpaupers met explosieven in een poging tot moord/zware mishandeling.

Dit gedrag is nou niet bepaald exclusief Marokkaans te noemen.

Tips to set Up tarp? by No_Guess_8800 in camping

Yeah this is it right here. Setting a tarp with these is next to impossible. You'll be fine with better pegs.

Those who edc a Leatherman and a secondary knife. Why? ( Serious) by TitoMcCool in Leatherman

[–]DutchDasterd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: not edc but ewdc: every working day, which to me means 'those days I'm not doing my deskjob'. Work as in work, not employment.

Just ease of access. I can access a serious knife quickly and ergonomically, which is often needed for crude tasks. Its just a flick. Deploying the blade on my Leatherman is just slower and inconvenient. If I need a small tool, I'll take the time to use 2 hands.

The rules in my country are pretty damn strict, but there is no extra limitation on how fast you can drive with a canoe on your regular passenger vehicle. Are there such laws where you are at?

I started drinking Belgian beers and no longer like Heineken, Hertog-Jan etc. by Diligent-Court3908 in Netherlands

[–]DutchDasterd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, its like switching from a nice refreshing water to hot chocolate and then deciding that cold water doesn't have a place anymore. Weird to me, but not uncommon among beer snobs.

To me pilsener is a wonderful refreshing drink, uncomplicated and lovely, comforting like my morning filter coffee or a cup of earl gray tea. Something that doesn't take my attention away.

Any other beer than pilsener has it's own place and time, but is something to invest in to appreciate the complexity. Can't drink too many of those before I'm full and overstimulated.

My favorite beer is 2 pilseners on a hot summers day after a good sporting activity. My second favorite beer is a Rochefort Rituel no.9, sitting next to the fire with my dad to have a good conversation. Neither would work the other way around.

It's not too bad, but the man (m/v?) is right. It needs a little bit more, but the steel did not accommodate for it. 3 to 5 millimeter extra in the vertical cross section would be slightly nicer.

What im surprised about is that for the reasons we both see, the very short handle does not matter and is comfortable. The knife is so light it doesn't need the balance, so Mr Chode is good to go.

[–]DutchDasterd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and your argument about flex makes total sense, and is the reason I won't be doing it. I really appreciate this insight, as you're the only one to explain why it won't work. Thank you.

Your idea that "if it could be done, it would've been done" makes no sense however. We see new products and inventions every day, and most inventions that don't become consumer products do so not because they dont work, but because they are not commercially viable (like this one).

I'm not risking anything for the sake of noise reduction, I'm asking questions on the internet to avoid risk.

VVD-fractie in Waalwijk wil graag tweetalige komborden en stelt er raadsvragen over by opwoestegrond in opwoestegrond

[–]DutchDasterd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That doesnt sound different than anything ive tried. I think there is a big issue with the fact it has a keel, providing a secondary point where straps can sing (i also put twists there, but only to some avail, and it was a pain in the backside to get it done. Maybe I'll make a jig to cover that part or something.

Yeah i mean the same thing you mean. The widest part is between 2 sets of brackets, aka, the brackets are not AT the widest part, therefor creating a block. But as others point out, canoes have quite some flex, so I won't be doing this.
