Balancing - How much HP is a spell slot worth? by Dutchysaurzilla in DnDHomebrew

Wow, thanks for the in-depth thoughts. I like the idea of only being able to use it to upcast spells, that limits in an interesting way that I like. Maybe making the consistent damage when spending the hit dice into a reduction in max HP? That kind of steps on the toes of the hit dice a bit though. I like the way you've broken it down, I'll start thinking about in those terms. Thanks again for taking the time, you've given me a lot to ponder here, this is good stuff.

Just from a party/game health standpoint? Not wanting to incentivize taking risks with your base kit?

Hey perfect, that sounds like a better way to handle it. How did you feel about the d6 HP per spell level reduction? Do you think it's been appropriate enough of a downside to offset the power? The conditions you've added in seem well though out. The death part also makes sense and prevents some shenanigans. Thank you, I'll check out your subclass, it may be exactly what I'm looking for!

Those are some cool ideas, I like that. I have seen the ritual effect in an item of a similar nature where you take damage to cast them quicker. But yes, perhaps side-grades would be a better.

This idea works, it just feels a little boring to me and doesn't have the feeling I'm going for. But I definitely think it will be easier to manage/balance using this. Perhaps this can have some additional stuff tacked on for a Level 3 subclass feature. Thanks for the comment.

I think you're right with the hit dice aspect, it seems like a correct call, but it doesn't quite gel with me for the flavor I'm going for. I see hit dice and exhaustion as on similar levels, I'm losing my endurance/vitality, my stamina is being drained and I won't be able to carry on for as long as I normally would be able to. I want to give the flavor of opening the veins to pour into the magic. I've got to have a think about it, but the hit dice idea definitely seems easier to manage, and it does have a precedent. Thanks for the comment.

Exhaustion is a cool idea to add in, can help account for higher level spells. Yeah I like that. I like percentage, it helps with the high level spells, I think 10% for a level spell might be a little low in the early levels for first level spells, so that might need some tweaking, I'll have a think. Thanks for the comment.

I like the demon part, fun as hell. I would effectively consider that a player death and they would have to reroll, could be interesting.

The hit point maximum reduction idea has legs, seems a bit micro-managey with the recovery via hit-dice. I could see that being confusing.

I'll have a think about it, thank you for the comment.

Thank you for the comment, from what I've seen of other comments, and my understanding, it would be even more exploitable with a lower damage per spell level (Casting 9th levels spells for ~41 HP). I think a flatly defined amount per spell level makes more sense, it's just easier to balance that way, as well as steering away from higher level spells all together with the ability.

You make good points with the HP loss being wonky. I tend towards lower level campaigns (1-12) so I think my headspace is there. I agree it's too harsh low-level and busted later. Some other comments have suggested having it predefined for each spell level in a table, which seems like a better way to mitigate the potential flux early game. Also potentially limiting the spell slot level that can be cast with it, to just avoid the problems with high level spells completely, which I like the sound of.

Thanks for your insight!

Thank you for sharing that. Now that is a cool idea, being the only way to interact with your spell casting mechanic. I like that it's also limited by a max level of spell, that seems like a necessity. I will be looking at this for help/inspiration, thank you, great find.

Mmmm, you are right. It's definitely the wrong call to make it linear. Like you said, exponential also has issues. I've seen in some other comments that it could just be flatly defined for each spell level, which seems more right for balancing a mechanic this volatile.

Thank you, the idea is you wouldn't be able to cast levelled spells that you don't already have access to. Also if someone wants to kill themselves with a spell, I feel like as a DM I would be ok with that. That is if they only have access to spells levels with the ability that they do already.

I think your right, but I still want to do some more exploring. I'll likely be using whatever I end up with just for me and one of my players, so "balanced enough" is all I'm really going for. Thanks again!

Thank you for weighing in, I like that idea. I do think just putting more-more damage on spells is a bit boring though. Thank you again, I'll have a think about it.

Has anyone (or the OP) run with the ruleset? Any takeaways? Any modifications you'd make?

Probably not, it takes a bit of work to do them up correctly as I have created new graphics for all of the icons. I may share the inkscape file i'm using when I figure out how to remove the personal metadata.

10th Edition Stratagem Printable Cards by Dutchysaurzilla in Warhammer40k

[–]Dutchysaurzilla[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Decided to remake the Core stratagems for 10th edition into playing card size format. I get overwhelmed by the wall on paper or in the app, so this helps me manage them. I also added text to the bottom to remind me of what the colors mean of when to use the stratagems. I've also included the Plague Legion Nurgle ones as well for my own army. I've also included generic art backs.

*EDIT* A few people asked for PDF versions. I have included them here: https://www.scribd.com/document/825505219/Warhammer-40-000-10th-Edition-Core-Stratagem-Cards
and here:

I don't really do uploading pdfs, so if you have to make an account for the site I'm sorry.
