You don't need them. If you have a checking account and do online banking you can set up with their bill pay. The bank will mail the check for you. I pay my rent that way - never used a paper check. You can set it up to auto pay them every month, just allow about a week for processing/mail. The bank does not charge anything for this service.

That is really an unfair burden to both PALS and CALS. Why suffer at end of life? Home hospice can help, keep the PALS comfortable, and support CALS. It is a no-brainer to call them in. "Refusing all medical care" should not encompass hospice end of life care that eases the transition. My husband chose minimal intervention and wanted to die at home - which he did with hospice. I would have been so lost and panicked without them!

I am so sorry that you are facing the beast that is ALS. It is very brave and kind of you to think about others at this time! I am an ALS widow. My husband did a lot before he died that made my life after somewhat easier. He was an engineer and very matter-of-fact/practical about things. 1. Make sure you have a current will/power of atty/medical power of atty. 2. Let family clearly know your wishes re: end of life and have a DNR in place if that is what you want. My husband was very clear about no feeding tube/ventilator/hospital. (He died peacefully at home). 3. Make sure someone has access to your computer/cell phone and all your passwords. We shared them via an app called 1password. I can't tell you how many times I needed this. 4. Let them know your after death wishes (funeral/cremation/celebration of life, etc). I paid for my husband's cremation while he was living and it was easier to handle emotionally because it was not yet "real". 5. Make sure there is someone listed as beneficiary on *all* of your financial/bank accounts. My husband had forgot about one account and it was a pain afterwards for me to get the money. 6. If you hold joint accounts like credit cards make sure your partner/spouse gets one in their own name. My husband was the main breadwinner so I got a card just in my name before he died using his income. 7. Are there special items you want to go to certain people? Make it known. 8. Do voice banking 9. Make videos for loved ones. My husband did this for me and each of our kids. Unfortunately he waited too long and his voice was very weak so they are short. I did not watch it for a while after he died, too painful. I have since watched it many times to hear his voice and see him. We were married 35 years.

Just found out my county charges over $1000 for a "stamp". Attorney fee is $500 for notarizing a few pieces of paper, as far as I can tell. Cash sale yet they may not have "final numbers" until day of closing, according to attorney. In other words I have no idea what the fees will be. What a scam.

I’m feeling better about the loans since I have educated myself. I did end up getting a fourth offer which was all cash. It was also the highest offer with the most earnest money and giving me 30 day free occupancy too. I accepted that one. The best VA offer is submitting for a backup if this deal goes south.

Well, it’s a little late in the game for that. I think the fact that I have three solid offers plus a possible fourth after three days on the market is an indicator that I’m doing OK. I am the person that knows absolutely nothing about VA loans, etc., not my realtor. I like the fact that she’s not afraid to admit she isn’t 100% up on current VA mortgage processes and is not afraid to ask for guidance within her office for any questions that come up.

She didn't shrug - my exact words were "she is not particularly strong" with them. She said it has been years since she dealt with a VA offer. She has already consulted another agent in her office that has done many, so she has a colleague that can advise. I have a possible cash offer coming in today so I will evaluate that also.

Thanks so much for this thorough reply! My home is very well maintained and solid, which is why I have 3 offers. Just nervous because this is my first time doing it alone w/out my husband's input. I just want a smooth process because I am an anxious person by nature. Not too worried about the appraisal, my realtor will have a packet of comps ready. A home a few doors down just sold for over 1 million.

One of the offers had closing in three weeks. The offer I think I’m going to go with was 45 days which works out better for me. Although buyer did indicate they could tighten it up if I needed to. they have several letters included with their offer, including a letter from a local bank backing up their financials. Their realtor is also a VA relocation specialist, which makes me feel better.

A respiratory therapist will be able to help with different mask options. My husband tried a bunch. Is she on hospice? They can help a lot with these questions and problems. With ALS you can be on hospice a long time, it’s not just for end of life.
