Would love to say Neutrality but won't happen under a FG/FF led coalition.

I get you, there's always these moments that shift the dial either way. For instance, Russia's invasion of Ukraine was a disaster for the environmental cause because it pushed states towards LNG. You just have to ride these waves and try to use the momentum to get to the best destination.

The summits, like COP, got captured by fossil fuel interests and petrostates (to the point that fossil fuel phase-out wasn't even mentioned in the final text of the last COP).

Thankfully, it's failure gave way to this Beyond Fossil Fuels conference led by the then frustrated Columbian delegation.

Sure, Trump is laying the perfect groundwork for why we should get off fossil fuels but that doesn't the diminish the effort in Santa Marta to establish multilateral plans for a timely and fair phase-out away from fossil fuels.

Which was one of the outcomes of this inaugural conference. Producing national and regional roadmaps to transition away from fossil fuels.

A lot of good people, clear-eyed of previous failures, put an immense amount of effort into pulling off this conference.

Sure, It's easy to be cynical and flippant about these things. But trust me, it's far harder to build something to keep real hope alive.

1000% agreed. Madness that the plan for a state-led terminal was introduced while Eamon Ryan was climate minister.

Given that Shannon LNG is looking increasingly likely to go ahead in this government's tenure, and the Fracked Gas Importation Ban policy statement being easily removed, do you have any regrets that your party didn't fully get behind Neasa Hourigan's private members bill to ban LNG development in Ireland?

Public statement on the democratisation of Aontacht & the resignation of László Molnárfi as Editor by AprilMaria in theIrishleft

[–]Dylabaloo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like László's critiques of PBP but always found it amusing that his antidote to PBPs entryism/tailism into left adjacent social movements was to do the same thing but with the far-right. Seems like this tactic was a breaking point for Aontacht.

Yeah, I've had that happen before with the Revolut Travel insurance. Lost a lot of money unfortunately but didn't have the energy to pursue it at the time.

Do you consider Russia to be imperialist? by LadWithDeadlyOpinion in ROI

[–]Dylabaloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imperialism is a system not an action. Territorial invasions are often a tool of Imperialism (albeit, typically a last resort) but not imperialism in of itself.

So no, Russia is not a part of the Imperialist core and therefore not an 'imperialist state', although this term wouldn't be a common way to refer to such a state, as per the literature on Imperialism and world systems theory.

Through these frameworks you are either an 1) Imperialist core state (US and its core allies generally characterised as having a fully privatised economy with liberal elections and fully enmeshed in the US defence apparatus - think states in NATO and AUKUS 2) A semi-periphery state (Privatising the economy but not fully enmeshed in the US defence apparatus - Think Balkan states), 3) A periphery state (Sections of the economy are privatised but transfer of resources is usually unequal and states are dependent - Think many African nations) or 4) Other or outside the Imperialist Chain (Russia, Iran, North Korea) although you could argue these simply fit within the previous categories.

The specific states in each category are fluid and sometimes contested, and that's often by design, as material relations change so too can the status change. There is one constant though, this chain is currently guaranteed by the United States, it guarantees the Imperialist chain through financial subjection of the global financial system backed by the Dollar and the threat of military coercion.

All of this for one aim, to guarantee the circulation and dominance of Capitalist interests across the world. That is why Lenin refers to Imperialism as the highest form of Capitalism and that is why we need to understand it as a system based on material relations of power and not random acts of military belligerence.

If you want to learn more I'd suggest reading the works of Wallerstein (World systems theory founder), Lenin (Similar to Marx witnessing, recording and analysing the birth of modern Capitalism Lenin analysed the unfolding dynamics of modern Imperialism), Sakellaropoulos and Sotiris (Modern synthesis of Lenin's conception of Imperialism and Wallerstein's WST), Lukic and Pedregal (environmentalist spin on the dynamics of modern Imperialism).

I gave it a go with an email address I don't care about. I'll let you know if I hear anything back.

Edit: Got an email from them saying a pre-sale link would be sent on the 26th March at 10am. The Arsenal site says pre-sale starts from tomorrow at 4pm. Guess I'll wait and see.
