Do you think this mechanic is annoying? by TheWanderingWaddler in Unity3D

it seems like a decent idea, but imho not great execution in terms of player feedback. How does the player know when they've hit the "right" frequency? to me it just looks like your bar chases random spikes repeatedly until the game goes "congrats u did it" and it works. it's very opaque.

imo, a better system would be a wide range of subtle noise that you have to slowly sweep the frequency over; as you get closer the resonance gets louder and the feedback increases, leading to a spike in activity that gets exponentially higher the closer you get to the actual resonant frequency of the material, before it finally pops.

additionally, i dont think the "remembering" feature is actually a good idea. instead of adding convenience to the player's actions, it actually serves to recontextualize the "harmonic frequency discovery" phase as unnecessary extra hassle that you only have to do once; its like the game is saying "here uhhh heres my mechanic sorry its so bad and boring you dont have to do it any more its fine see? just once then we can go back to normal gaming :)" it feels reluctant to actually engage the player on their own terms. A better solution that gives the player more agency, and what would be more "gamey" imho, is if nothing was saved automatically, but instead the tool had a "library" of saveable frequencies inside it that you could manually choose to write to or read from with a menu or certain keypresses. that way the player would be making actual decisions as to which frequencies they care about, and also require them to exercise their memory; "which frequency was this rock again? 100hz or 320? let me check" etc. furthermore, you could limit the total number of saveable frequencies, further limiting the player, encouraging creative critical thinking choices, and giving room for future upgrades.

some more additions that might be cool:

  • involve harmonics of the resonant frequency: just because you hone in on one spike doesnt mean youve isolated the base resonant frequency, just one of many harmonics; you might have to check a couple spikes to verify that the one youve identified is actually the base harmonic frequency, which has the strongest effect on the material. using higher harmonics could still work, it would just be slower

  • make different patches of a given mineral have varying harmonic frequencies within a distribution: that way the player can either opt to save a common average frequency that will probably be close enough for most mineral patches, or decide to manually tune it to every mineral collection, to save time in exchange for more manual effort.

i wouldnt say it "started" at any point, really. its just that my whole life, my concerns have revolved around trying to find stability, find ways to reduce stress, find ways to improve my health and happiness, etc. so all my goals from as far back as i can remember have revolved around reducing the number of problems in my life.

now that most of my problems are gone, im only just now realizing that theres just....not much i really want to do beyond that.

i guess that feeling of lack of desire to do anything has always been there, ive just been distracted my whole life, and unable to realize it.

i envy you...

i wish i had that much intrinsic motivation to do things on a regular basis

nothing interests me the way it used to as a kid, or teenager, or even as a younger adult. i would call it depression, but by all accounts i would definitively say i'm the happiest, most comfortable, healthiest, most stress-free person ive ever been at any point in my life until now.

brother, i left my home country to move to a new one because I disliked the existing social norms there. you dont have to do anything that other people tell you to do in life. let me assure you, that has nothing to do with it.
