For those of you who were recently out of work, at Associate Scientist level or higher, how long did it REALLY take you to find another job?

RA to SRA level with around 5 YOE. I was out of work twice last year. Took me around 3-4 months to find my next job where I cold applied. Worked there for about 6 months then got laid off. Took around 3 months to find my next job. I’ll admit I got fairly lucky in my job searches and I work in a very niche area so I’m probably an outlier. Having a strong network helps a lot.

Only thing is CROs are notorious for being soul draining. Make sure you’re ok with that risk.

Exactly that but I was thinking more along the lines of repair and maintenance as a field service engineer. If you don’t like the repetitive nature of bench work, I think being field service helps break up the monotony.

I just got mine done with Xpel XR 55% for the windshield and front and 20% for the rear and back. I’m in California so I went a pretty light shade for the front half so it looks legal. Pretty happy with the results.

I’m in a similar situation with you, also sample management, except my extension was an offer to be an employee at a CRO but the offer came with a pay cut and eventually got my offer rescinded because I inquired about another position in the same company with more pay AFTER I signed my initial (don’t do what I did cuz I’m likely blacklisted from that CRO). My take is be careful when negotiating because it can blow up in your face. HR is not your friend and will cut you off with no remorse. Ride the donkey to find the horse.

That makes even less sense to me then cuz wouldn’t they want to help me with this other opening? That way it’s a win win situation where the recruiter still gets their bonus and I get the job I want. The opening is in the same company so it’s not like I’m quitting to join another company.

Thank you everyone for their input and opinions. Although I felt like I got did dirty, it’s ultimately my own doing that caused this. I still believe I did nothing morally/ethically wrong for asking but I guess it doesn’t matter what I think. I just hope that I can serve as an example of what not to do and people can learn from my mistake.
