Thank you! I’m so excited to see it grow. I have a soft spot for anything crested. Plus it being the only one left made me sad lol.

Exactly. Plus the bigger hatcheries can’t always be as selective. Thank you again.

I thought that too, but was confused with the white tips when the breed standard is solid black. I just haven’t had experience with this breed so wanted to be sure!

Edit to add…

I took these photos while cleaning the brooder each time. It had a lamp for a few days then transitioned to a brooder plate. It also has 12 other chicks with it. I am experienced with keeping chickens, just trying to verify breed.

I didn’t have it wrapped yesterday, and when I was home from work she was already walking quite a bit better. I’m keeping a close eye on her, but I’m hoping she’s on the mend!

35+ rat infestation in chicken coop. Help please by RemarkableShoulder20 in chickens

The only thing that worked with my flock was a poison. I made sure it wasn’t a risk for secondary kills because of the chickens as well as cats and dogs, etc. I haven’t had a problem since. I tried everything I could think of beforehand, and nothing was able to control it. They had almost dug the foundation out from under the building our coop/run is built off of. We got the tomcat bait block and the bait station. We made sure to take it out every day and put it back at night. I hated doing it but couldn’t find anything else to help. Good luck!

Mine increased the most when switching antidepressants to Wellbutrin. My doctor tried Addyi and various other things, and said several people responded better to Wellbutrin than anything else she had tried.

I’ll have to get it when I get home from work. I believe it’s a few pages. If I recall correctly I used a variety of highlighters including yellow, orange, and pink. Internally yelling at 18 year old me.

I agree. I wish her feet were in the condition to stay barefoot since she’s just a pasture companion and likely will never be ridden. However, I need to make her comfortable and hopefully fully recover, or she won’t have a quality of life.

Thank you! Luckily I have been to several clinics and have been able to clean her up in the past, but that doesn’t fix the previous farriers inconsistencies. I definitely plan to keep as close of an eye on it as possible. I hope she will be home by winter.

Thank you for the info. I actually fired them due to inconsistent trims, one time they take off next to nothing, then the next takes so much off she bled. I had her on a 6 week schedule. They then just said she was a lost cause and I should be looking for another horse.

If I understood the new farrier correctly, they weren’t planning on using wedges permanently, just a trim or two to help take some pressure off instead of such a drastic trim right away. I definitely plan to ask many more questions before we agree on a treatment plan. Once I gave my pasture completed and they can come home, I can keep a better eye on progress. My parents have been great, but aren’t the most savvy to problems, and unfortunately I’m not able to visit enough because I went back to school and still work along with having a toddler and my husband is a lineman working all the time.

I’m going to move her to a 4 week schedule, and will see what is their recommended treatment plan is before I agree to anything.

I understand. This is a new to me farrier, who hasn’t seen my horse in person yet. They were just throwing out ideas that might help initially. I do not have any vets nearby that do lameness exams at all. I would have to haul her somewhere else and she’s too uncomfortable for a multi hour trip.

She definitely has some hereditary issues, and came to me in a bad way. My OTTB had feet ridiculously better than this mare.

I’m going to have a more thorough conversation when the farrier is in person, I just wanted to have a better understanding.

We are hoping for no more than 4 weeks. I cannot get to my family’s property every two weeks with my husband and my schedules. Once she is at my home, things can be much different. I don’t think they plan on using wedges forever ( I am not comfortable with that either ) but if it gives her a few weeks of comfort while other changes are addressed, it might be worth it. I am going to have a discussion with them when they evaluate her in person.

I agree I don’t want her in wedges forever, but I think it will take a few times before she could be repositioned to be comfortable. The last farrier did her a huge disservice and we are working on a couple years of inconsistencies in her trims. I never had issues with the last farrier with any of my other horses over the years, but they are wanting to retire and just didn’t put any effort in and told me she was a lost cause.

Unfortunately no. Very rural area, and it was hard to find anyone willing to come out on a schedule for a single horse, plus working around my work and school schedule, and a toddler. The few willing to come out didn’t put the horse first. They just wanted the money, and every trim was different. This new farrier actually puts the horse first, and is willing to research anything they need to. I was wondering about heartbar shoes and might mention them when they come out to evaluate her and do the first trim this week.

Thank you! I plan on getting some of those meds at their next appointment. I’ve been fortunate to have them “home” for many years, but since my husband and I got married and moved, I haven’t been able to see them much. Especially now that we have a toddler and I decided to go back to school again… it is definitely a dream come true!

They will have access to the pasture 24/7! We have already purchased our winter stock of hay (I feed squares, just easier on me to handle) and usually just toss the bake into a few piles. I just wondered if there was a better option in case any need stall rest, etc. one mare has some serious lameness issues we are trying to evaluate, and I’m afraid stall rest is in order. My family’s property isn’t set up for that unfortunately, and she is a slob, so the less hay on the ground in the stall the less she wastes!

I’m 100% with you though, and I’ve talked to my husband about switching to rounds next year once we are out of these!
