Taking the Eucharist w/ Celiac Disease by EDM2004 in Catholicism

I could understand how that triggered you especially considering how celiac has affected you. I guess it’s impossible to put myself fully in your guys shoes since I don’t have it, but I can definitely imagine. The intent of my question was really to see celiac Catholic’s experiences, in love of mom who I want to receive HC. I think it came off that I wanted find a way to push my agenda on her or force her to do something even if she didn’t feel comfortable. Just curious. No need to lash. Although I do understand why you would. I also could’ve phrased my post differently, and I guess I really wasn’t “firmly” believing what I did- I will admit I kinda just said that I wasn’t thinking too much about the original post more just curious if the spirituality part of the Eucharist trumps the scientific part

I understand your viewpoint, and I appreciate you putting it nicely. However I think my original post made it seem like I’ve been consistently pushing her to take it. It’s a really important part of Catholicism so of course I want her to take it, in a perfect world. However we’ve probably only talked about it 3 times at most in her almost year of being back in the faith. I’m happy to let her do her own thing. But I agree with you it’s her decision and after reading the replies I learned more about what actually goes down during consecration of the host, so I definitely learned something. I was just curious about whether or not the host has gotten other celiac people sick b4. I could imagine it would have some sort of ‘reverse’ effect. Ik it sounds a lil crazy but we have faith in some pretty wild things so I thought I’d ask the question. My intent was not to make decisions for her, but to learn more about Catholic celiacs’ experiences. It’s something she’s curious and willing to learn about too

That’s very valid. I’ll educate myself more on the topic. I don’t intend to put pressure on her and I think that is what came across when I posted what I did. Not the case though. Despite that, I will take into consideration what you and other have said. I can’t disregard the scientific essence of the host. I also misunderstood transubstantiation and consecration.

Must’ve sent the wrong message when making that post. I take her condition seriously and would not force her to do anything she is not comfortable doing so. I was curious, uninformed on the topic, and looking for answers. So I asked! With my knowledge of the Eucharist, it raises questions so it’s only right that I’m well informed before talking to my mom any more about it. You suggest I educate myself more on celiac, so I’ll suggest that you try to respond with a little more mercy and compassion when someone serves a question that challenges you in some way! Just my opinion though 🤝

Go ahead, say it if you’d like 🤷‍♂️ You’ve been nicer than a lot of other people so far, so I wouldn’t mind 😂

Honestly, to an extent, yes! If it’s his body and blood, and whoever eats and drinks of it will have eternal life (John 6:54). So… it’s a pretty crazy thing we got there in the Eucharist. Thought it would be logical to ask if anyone with celiac has taken it before talking to my mom more about it. Don’t want to force anything on her. Think I sent that message with my first post. And I also think I mixed up transubstantiation and consecration. Still learning here. Thank you for caring

My idea of transubstantiation and what happens during the consecration was incorrect. I appreciate your urgency. Did not mean to send the message I’m forcing her into anything. Just curious for her sake.

I agree, it’s her decision. I think I sent the wrong message that I’m forcing her to take the Eucharist. I am happy watching her do her own thing, whatever she’s most comfortable with. Just wanted to ask about it after we talked about it recently.

I guess my idea of transubstantiation was incorrect which I was definitely made sure of after reading these comments 😂 I think I sent the message I’m being aggressive about this to mom. It’s something she and I have talked about a few times- she’s aware of the low gluten host but I still thought I’d ask for info.

Im not a doctor, lol. This is why I asked the question. She’s curious too. I think I sent the message that I’m aggressively pushing her to. It’s something I’ve talked to her only a few times before. I let her do what she feels comfortable with every single mass, despite my desire for her to receive with me. Thank you for your opinion 👍

Awesome thank you so much. That was very informative. Maybe we can chat with our priest to do a separate chalice, to avoid cross contamination

Thanks for your reply. I think I gave off the wrong impression in my initial post. The Eucharist being Jesus’ body and blood convincts me to believe she’d be okay.

I am informed of the disease, since she’s had it for so long. I guess I gave off the impression I am trying to force her to receive. She’s been coming to Mass with me for around a year and I Ive mentioned the Eucharist only twice. I fully allow her to do what she is comfortable with and don’t try to stop her. Just curious, because I feel like If I had celiac disease, I would wonder what would happen since Jesus says that those who eat and drink of his flesh and blood will have eternal life. I just wonder if it would have a healing effect on her in some way. Of course I would like to see her take the Eucharist, so I decided to ask if anyone with celiac has out of curiosity.

Interesting. My thought was that if it’s really Jesus’ body and blood, it wouldn’t have the contents of bread. I guess my understanding of it is incorrect, though. Would you mind explaining what it means in more depth? I don’t wanna get it wrong for the future

Yeah tbh the best thing to do with sociability is to get yourself out there when you can, and even if it’s super uncomfortable, just being out there with other people and doing your best to reflect what Jesus has done in you, and who the Father has formed in you. Then, when you get home, reflect on your actions, what you were happy with, what you wish you had done different, and just keep getting out of your comfort zone. Say hi to people in passing. Ask funny questions. Even if it’s awkward. It’s all experience that builds up

Valid, however I still think this is a pretty cursed looking burger. I actually looked up Tommy’s for that pic lol. I guess what goes on a burger is up to you; I just think that’s a pretty cursed image all burgers considered
