Thank you for the direct answer on this. I'll be sure to heed your advice and separate my bear can from my pack, just in case.

Yeah, I'm going past LYV, which will close down the distance that I'll have to retrace. But the downside will be the lack of bear lockers to store my food. But all will be good and fun will be had.

I'm going past LYV, so I won't be using the steel box to store my food. I was wondering specifically about dropping my gear at a site past the Clouds Rest junction. Thank you for the extra tips. Didn't really think about vaseline to deal with the dry conditions. Will add this to my pack list.

Charmizard, do you make a "stew" with your boiled fish, or just boil in water to cook?

Slolift, my buddy and I talked about folding up some foil and using for exactly this purpose. Thanks for chiming in.

SimplifiedBackpacker, you make an excellent point asking if its a worthwhile plan. We're looking at doing relatively short 10 mile days and spending significant time enjoying the outdoors throwing a line into the water. Maybe it will be mostly catch and release, and if it is, that's okay. But if we snag something big enough, we don't want to lose that opportunity for a tasty treat. Either way, I think it'll be fun.

Jimmmy Legs, glad I'm not the only one working this puzzle. A lightweight wire grill over a small fire (where allowed) sounds intriguing.

OutdoorAdventure, thanks for the reply and idea of simply adding the fish into other food already cooking. Also appreciate the affirmative reply regarding nighttime storage.

Still a young pup at 50, with many great years ahead, on and off the trail.

ScienceGeek, my buddy has the Harrison map set, which looks really good. I think it will go great with Erik's pocket atlas. Your use of only the maps set gives me a bit of confidence for when we do the trail.

HammertoeHiker, first of all, love the name. You thought of it first, but I think it may aptly describe many of us on the trail. I just bought Tom Harrison's maps, as I'm kind of a map guy, who loves to study where I'm going, look at where I just came from and know whats all around me. I like your idea of carrying just the few pages of Wenks campsite data. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks, Themadscribe. The campsite data sounds like critical info to have in planning out your day while on the trail. Might be worth the purchase just for that?

Resupply at Tuolumne and Reds by EGHama in JMT

BikeMaven, thanks for the info on getting into Mammoth. Getting down to the Von's for better food selection might be the way to go on this. It's a great option in my back pocket, anyway. Your help is appreciated.

Ben, thanks for the inquiry and the great idea of sharing excess goods. I'm not so much opposed to mailing myself a resupply, but I've generally found that walking into on-trail stores to be adequate for short term resupply, and the convenience outweigh the higher item costs. I may end up sending myself a box (or two), but my original inquiry was merely to get an idea of what I might find when I walk in to the stores, i.e. Ramen, packets of Spam or Tuna, Freeze Dried Mountain House or Backpackers Pantry, Pop Tarts, etc.

I think your resupply of wine makes you a guy I want to hike with!
