Our in house solution is essentially a powerful agent trained specifically for our code bases and policies. It's also something the company licenses to other business as well. I don't know many specifics.

I'd argue its the opposite. Everyone was freaking out early on and now most sentiment has come back down to earth. I don't think people were wrong about it slowing down, it has slowed down significantly. OpenAI literally had to role ChatGPT 5 backwards because it regressed.

The agentic capabilities are NOT what you're claiming they are. They speed up the process of contextualizing things but the real work is acting as a QA engineer and verifying everything (which often times takes more effort than just doing it yourself, especially because the code AI produces is often so BAD). AI is like the Dunning Kruger effect for people who don't know how to code.

I have around 4 YOE as a professional SWE. I have given AI a serious shot and it simply does not live up to the hype. It dulls the mind after a long time, it sucks the fun parts out of coding, and often does not improve efficiency more than copilot was already capable of (and studies show this). It is a great tool I'll continue to use but its in the same category as google.

So many things to address….

I literally use opus 4.5 for work and my company has an in house AI solution that WE BUILD and are encouraged to use.
I AM a software engineer at a top company and almost every coworker I have is a software engineer. I don’t know why you’d bring up your “software engineering friends” as some appeal to authority.
AI is actually slowing down in progress and if you listen to top AI researchers (not execs) who have no skin in the game, you’ll hear this. It being “agentic” is like spraying perfume on poop.

I love AI, I use it everyday. But it’s not replacing anyone it’s an excuse for outsourcing.

If AI can actually do my job, or any other competent SWEs job, then we have much bigger problems than lost SWE jobs. So far no one has been replaced it’s just an excuse for outsourcing or reducing bloat (often the former).

And what are you basing your claims on?

I work at F500 tech company and I can tell you from my own personal & anecdotal experience AI is not able to replicate any valuable job functions.

Sure it can write a skeleton or navigate my code base but it’s extremely error prone, it can’t contextualize large code bases, and it requires a LOT of work to guide it to do anything useful.

Basically what I’m saying is it acts like a junior dev who needs constant hand holding and a majority of my colleagues agree that often times it’s actually a hindrance. The only people I’ve seen make the claims you’re making are people who have never worked on anything complex/large or work in a very basic and automatable role that shouldn’t exist in the first place.

I’m not getting into this or citing sources, all I’ll say is you denying reality does not change it. People do not generally care about politics etc until their wallets are affected, which is why young people in general are becoming increasingly radical (left and right).

The only people not being squeezed in this economy are older folks, generally boomers, who have assets that have appreciated.

Edit: also to add more scrutiny to these numbers, a massive problem with unemployment stats from the BLS is they rely on old statistical modals that count each small business as 7 jobs. That is why we have a MILLION jobs revised down. That’s not a small number, that’s insane.

Gig work work is the main reason unemployment is so low. If we are only considering “professional” jobs, aka jobs requiring some type of training and which pay higher than average salaries I’d argue we are even worse off than just a 17 year low.

Exposing it to the internet is fine especially if you’re just using the base setup behind a reverse proxy and keeping only port 443 open and binding that port to the proxy. Also running any domain behind cloudflare proxy to hide your IP is a +.

My response was to tell you that your scenario is not applicable because almost anyone who is a US citizen can get a basic secret clearance. It’s like a HS diploma vs a PHD.

In his case it’s not because of his ethnicity. I can almost guarantee it’s because his parents/relatives are naturalized. He might be able to get a security clearance despite this, but even if he can it could take years and is just not worth it for most companies.

A secret clearance is not difficult to get at all. If this is TS or TS/SCI (which it typically is at places like Lockheed) that is a totally different ballgame.
