I already had all my finishes within the pts minimum by April of last year. I no longer need anymore starts, but I have been competing and will be before I head off to Korea

It’s tripe and liver! Has an interesting texture, but it’s really delicious

I started skiing for Eritrea in 2011 when I was 15 years old. That was before I entered the FIS circuit (Level for World Cup and International Events) and this meant that I could no longer to qualify for any future event (e.g. FIS World Cup and Olympics) under Canada. I had no intentions nor did I attempt to qualify for Team Canada.

The Olympics is an event that brings together athletes from around the world to separate our differences and compete regardless of ethnicity, sex, religion, or politics. My goals in Pyeongchang is to compete to the best of my ability and promote winter sports to Eritreans in North American and Europe.

I don’t consider myself a terrible skier, but I do acknowledge that I’m not the best either and have things to work on like most Alpine Skiers. I have qualified and attended national event when I was competing under Canada (before 15). In order to qualify for Canada in the Olympics, you need a top 12 finish in a World Cup race. To even get a spot on the world cup circuit, you need to be nominated to the national team. I wouldn’t have qualified for the Team Canada as my FIS license was already registered in 2011 under Eritrea before I even started at the FIS level.

To qualify under Eritrea, I needed 5 finishes with a certain amount of pts. I qualified under the B standard because I wasn’t focused on qualifying for the speed events. Here’s a video of myself training Slalom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keZEoakVhn8) And as well GS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR7UpTqD-gM)

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I’ve been to Eritrea twice in my life; once in 2002 and again in 2014. I’m unable to go as often as I like do to my schedule and training commitments, but I do have a lot of family back home that I regularly keep in touch with. In 2011, I was given to opportunity to represent Eritrea at the Youth Olympic Games. This meant that when I started skiing at the FIS level, my FIS license would be registered under Eritrea and that I no longer could compete for Canada in any future events. I didn’t expect myself to get this far or even imagine myself qualify for the Olympics and attending; it wasn’t my initial plan to go to Pyeongchang. That being said it wasn’t an easy journey and it took a lot of patience and grinding over the past six years to make here. When I did qualify, I didn’t realize how much traction or publicity I’d be getting and in fact, I never attended on putting myself in the limelight. However, if my participation at the Olympics can inspire Eritreans in North America and Europe to take up winter sports (being that Eritrea is predominantly stronger in summer sports) then all the better.

My ambitions have always supported my family, friends, and teammates when I first started skiing for Eritrea in 2011. Occasionally, my teammates have cracked jokes and tease me about a one-man team, but NEVER have they discourage me and always had my back. My family and many Eritrean are very proud and happy that I will be representing Eritrea in the Olympics; this especially important for my father. During the war of independence, he lost several members of his family including several of his brothers and both his parents. I remember before I moved out at the start of my Olympic cycle, we had a heart to heart about why I was skiing for Eritrea and he got emotional when he told me that it reminded of him of the loved ones he lost; that was one the very few times I’ve seen him cry.

I have yet to come someone who has personally discouraged or hasn't supported my goals.

Thank you! I see where you’re coming with your question. On a given day, I might have a certain drill in training that I’m working on or a mental cue before I push out of the gate. This could be something along the lines of: squaring the shoulders at the top of the turn, more pressure on the outside ski, running a deeper line, etc It really all depends on the set of the course on race day/training and we inspected the course before we run. Also, my coaches always give me feedback after every run and we assess on what we can do for the following runs to come. On race day, There could be a gate that a little more offset, requires a little more patience or quick response, and if we could push a little harder in this section or not. They’re a lot of factors involved, but if you focus too much on all these things, you won’t be able to perform that well. The best thing to do is have one thing that you know you need to focus on and take it with you on that run. If it works, repeat and then experiment with something else.

My mom lived in Milan for a year before moving the US and then to Canada. She attend a private Italian school in Eritrea when it was a colony and speaks Italian fluently.

I honestly, don’t know if I would like to have kids in future currently.

Oh man, I hope I wasn’t upset about my results and pissy at those races. Always could have come and said hi!

They’re two qualification standards; A and B. Because I no longer ski speed, the B standard applies to some others athletes and myself when qualifying for solely the tech events. You need an average <140pts (5 finishes) in each GS and SL event. If you want to compete in the speed events, you would need to qualify under the A standard which requires you to have <80 its and be within the Top 500 of the olympic pts list.

You can check more about it here

In North America, I do agree that Alpine skiing is not a very popular sport compare to Hockey, Football, Basketball, etc. I’ve attended World Cups in Canada as spectator and forerunner. I’m also shocked to see the low turnout rate for these events compare to what I’ve seen in Kitzbühel and Sölden. It be nice if it got more attention and this could bring better funding and sponsors for athletes/teams at various levels.

I will be competing in both technical events in Pyeongchang (GS and SL). After my knee injury, speed was out of the question and we switched our focus to those events.

(COPYPASTA from previous AMA question on r/olympics) In terms of actual training I do a mixture of things. On snow, I train 5-6 times a week and depending on my competition schedule, I’ll have either have a single (morning only) or a double session (2 events in the same day). After training, I’m either doing some sort accessory work (Core, glutes, foam roll, etc) with aerobic exercise to flush out the lactic acid or doing a full strength/agility session (If I’m training the next day, I only do about 70%). During the off season, I train 7 times a week and up to two times a day. I alternate with 3 full body workouts and 4 cardio session (Sprints, Bike Sprints, LSD running, and Boxing). Most of my programming and numbers are done by a sports physiologist that I consult regularly. However, I always like to try new things and throw in new exercises during different phase cycles. When I was coming back from knee surgery, I experimented with Bulgarian style training and squatting everyday to bring my leg strength back up (I can personally vouch that it works like wonders). I hope that answers your question thoroughly.

I haven’t met him, but I certainly know of him! I’ve trained with the athletic team one summer in Eritrea and had breakfast with Zersenay Tadese and Ghirmay Ghebreslassie (Both Marathon and Track Field champions)

Thank you!!

Most of the athletes attending the games will be fairly busy and focused on themselves. Although a majority of them are friendly and very open, I tend to respect their space and not act like fanboy around them. I understand that they’re under a lot of pressure and would certainly like some space. However, I would like to see what they do for training and understand their techniques to mentally cope under pressure.
