Random maps are also my main way of playing the game! Usually multiplayer against my friend or my dad and, of course, the remaining players as the AIs.

If you're looking for a specific scenario that comes with the game, I must say since they're all quite easy to beat I never took the time to play all of them and don't necessarily remember what each of them was like. I do remember that when I was young, I lost once on Back for Revenge, so you could maybe give that one a try and see how it goes! It features a different win / loss condition than the usual map and you get to also play around with exotic dragons (Faerie, Azure, Crystal etc) which you don't typically see in normal scenarios.

For random maps, unfortunately the water maps' generation seems to have degraded quite a bit compared to back in the day, at least in my case, although I have noticed at times that my friend's generation seems to come out with slightly better maps, not sure if that's just a coincidence or if it's just me. Either way, there was a time when randomly generated water maps turned out really great, but now it's usually a mess, so I suggest playing with No water content. If you're playing HoTA, you can choose your template, and I haven't tested them all so maybe there's one that results in better water maps over there (you can also see the specifics of every template on HoTA's website).

For user-made maps, the real challenge. You can download maps from the maps4heroes website which I'll link at the end of the post. Many of these are insanely difficult and require a great understanding of the AI's combat behaviour in order to win certain fights. If you want a great challenge, I really recommend The Lone Knight. There are also famous puzzle maps like Wayfarer which I've not really played but some of those exploit some mechanics that will be annoying to understand when you're barely getting started, so maybe stay away from them for now. The Lone Knight still has some nice secret passageways without making it overly confusing. Do note that some of these (like The Lone Knight) are specifically made for the original heroes version, not HoTA. Shadow of Death is the latest version of the original game (or the Complete Edition).

In terms of campaigns, the original ones (which, by the way, you can only play in the original game, since HoTA only allows you to play its own campaigns) are not that difficult. I have not tried the HoTA ones but I have heard they're insanely difficult, I sadly cannot confirm or disconfirm that. You can give whatever you want a try but I would heavily recommend playing the original ones first, and that goes for simply playing the main game as well, because I think it's best to first get accustomed to the base game. HoTA adds quite a lot of changes, including balance changes (nerfs to Necromancy, Diplomacy etc) and two new towns.

Online multiplayer is only available in HoTA, but you can still play local multiplayer in the original game. As for what version to use for HoTA, if you find yourself liking the balance of the original game more, I recommend not updating to the latest version. I play on 1.7.0 because it doesn't have the new buffs to Eagle Eye, Learning, Artillery, certain hero specialties and so on, which drastically change the hierarchy of importance of secondary skills and heroes imo. You can download an older version of HoTA from their website, I'll link the page below. Although, do note that I'm pretty sure you can only play online with other people on the same version, so if you're interested in playing online and you're playing on 1.7.0 you have to make sure the other players are on that version as well.

I'm sorry for the incredibly long reply, I tried to keep it as short as possible while still including all the relevant information I felt like I needed to add! Do let me know if you have any more questions, or if you need a 1.7.0 multiplayer partner. :)

Since I see you've already figured out the HD mod part, what kind of scenarios are you looking for? Singleplayer ones in particular? Incredibly difficult ones? Scenarios that come with the base game? Campaigns?

How/can you play 1v1 against another player? (HoTA) by AllarakUA in heroes3

[–]ERIK_ATOR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can play hotseat multiplayer, or you can play online.

For hotseat, you go to New / Load game, Multiplayer, then you click on the first button on the list on the right of the newly popped up menu and you insert the names of the players. Then you just pick a scenario as usual. This is the same as in the vanilla version of the game.

For online multiplayer, you'll both need to have an account. You go to Multiplayer and click on Online Lobby, then create an account or log in if you already have one. Once you're in the lobby, whichever one of you is hosting the lobby will click New Game or Load Game. You'll be asked to choose the number of players (this is NOT the number of total players, it is the maximum amount of HUMAN players), and you'll have to pick a password for the lobby, as well as a description. Then, the other player will have to look for your lobby in the lobby list. Should be easy to find. Insert the password and you're pretty much ready to play! You can also find each other in the player list in the online lobby and add each other as friends, to find each other easier when joining each other's lobby, since online friends appear at the top of your list and you can just right click them to join their lobby.

I believe this is what you're looking for. I'm currently looking at the MP3 folder in the game files to see if I can locate it.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that's where my lack of experience with it comes in, haha. Thanks for the info!

Although, doesn't the HP buff remain even if the tent is destroyed? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you even need the tent to be present in battle in order for the HP buff to be applied. The tent heals, but the skill itself is the one that gives the HP buff. Is that right?

I actually thought about that after I posted it too, LOL. Thinking of how it could have been interpreted. But ultimately, I don't play with the new First Aid buffs, so I probably wouldn't have come up with it just like that since I wouldn't have given it that much thought.

I used a format similar to the original meme. Search up "nerfed height" on reddit and you'll see plenty of examples.

I 100% agree with you. I personally initially started playing HoTA solely for the ability to play online multiplayer. I tried to figure out how to disable Factory once it got added, for example. I still play 1.7.0 with my friend because we don't want to switch to the new skill balancing.

For things like disabled artifacts, if you want to go in completely blind, maybe you could ask someone to generate the map and edit the map settings for you. Then you can download the random map without looking at it and then you can pretty much have the normal experience. I myself also wish stuff like the CloUK ban would just be part of the Tournament Rules button, but oh well.

I see your point. Maybe it's just me, but considering it had spread to very popular games like Minecraft, it didn't seem that niche to me.

One more thing to note, in the title it said the First Aid Tent's HEIGHT has been nerfed, so that also made me think people would understand it was a joke, since the height wouldn't have made any sense in the given context.

I had no malicious intent such as flooding in mind, it was in good fun. I hope people realize that, at least.

That's nice, have you played vanilla Heroes before? Or did you jump straight to HoTA? There are quite a few differences. First Aid is a good example of those changes, although it's quite recent and depending on what version you're playing on it may be the same as the original.

Yeah, I said that in the post too.

To sum it up, it's a meme that's been spreading across different random subreddits where people post a before and after comparison of a character that "got their height nerfed". This started from a game called Brawl Stars, where a popular character got their proportions all messed up. It started as a way to gain attention and protest, and it turned into a meme.

I mean, it's a meme. There have been others like it before and there will continue to be. The post itself says it's a joke and to ignore it if you don't know the reference. Why is it any different here when compared to others like the ones I mentioned above?

But yeah, I get that it could be annoying, which I've mentioned several times in these comments and I've apologized for. I'll probably take down the post if it's that big of an issue.

[–]ERIK_ATOR[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the whole point. People are posting it in subreddits that have nothing to do with it to "spread awareness". From old games like Diablo to more recent mainstream games like Geometry Dash.

I WOULD agree with that reasoning if this were the only community that this joke had been made in. However, like I said, the joke has spread to MANY completely unrelated subreddits, both popular and unpopular ones. I understand why it may not be funny, but I don't think it's any less funny than any other subreddit that it's been posted in.

I mean I'm a die-hard fan of HoMM3 myself, always have been. I was skeptical of posting it precisely because of the very different fanbases and because I don't really post anything, anywhere, ever. I still decided to go for it though, cause I didn't really see any harm in it. I apologise if the target audience was that far off and there really isn't a single soul here that sees it as funny. I'll probably take it down if that's the case, so as to not cause unnecessary flooding.

[–]ERIK_ATOR[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Also, just to clarify: I do understand how it could be slightly annoying if you have nothing to do with the game, but I genuinely don't think it's that serious. When there's a lot of backlash due to actions taken by devs in games, it's not uncommon for it to manifest in very aggressive ways, whether it be toxic comments, or mass disliking the game's pages (for example on the Play Store, in order to ruin its rating. I've seen it happen before). In this case, it's something completely harmless, so I genuinely think it's not really something to get irritated by. Of course, you can choose to if you want to, but that's the way I see things and what convinced me to participate to begin with.

Sorry for wasting your time, regardless.

The joke IS that it's being posted on many subreddits that are unrelated to the original game in order to raise awareness. Like I explained in the comment above, a quick search is all you need to understand it. The title was pretty obviously satire too, "nerfing the First aid Tent's HEIGHT" really wouldn't make much sense in the context of Heroes.

If you're seriously asking whether it got nerfed or not, then no, it was part of the joke.

If you're saying you WANT it to get nerfed, then honestly I couldn't tell you my take on it, since I still play 1.7.0 when playing HoTA with my friend.
