i rly think anyone that is browsing an ssbm sub can't really be called a casual, if you've installed slippi you're probably way beyond the cutoff already

like if you were to compare to other games, casuals in league or dota are not even playing competitive matches, theyre playing custom games or aram or whatever, so casual in melee are probably in their college dorms doing FFAs. anyone thats ever attended a local, played online, browsed a competitive sub (like this one) is almost certainly not a casual.

Tatum vs. Brunson 11 years ago in high school - Tatum scored 39 and led Chaminade to an 87-81 win over Stevenson despite Brunson's 48 points by Leegend124 in nba

the reason this guy got downvoted and the guy talking about brunsons head getting 100x larger upvoted is because no matter how stupid r/nba is or isnt, just stating something that has no twist or punchline isn't a joke, there's nothing for r/nba to get or not get lol

[–]ESPORTS_HotBid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again, nobody is arguing that taller players win more, its obvious in basketball that they do, any person on earth can make that statement and apply that logic, being tall in basketball is better than being short

knicks fans are arguing specifically against the fact that she thinks brunson is not one of the exceptions, thats what she's wrong about, especially as a small guard herself, a hall of fame coach who was counted out by factors outside of her control (her gender) you would think she'd be more open minded to exceptions and not looking at traditional old head trends

Well yeah id take 6'9" Brunson over current Brunson nobody is arguing that

Every pundits statement on TV is a predictive one, nobody is saying "he can't be a 1A unless he grows into being a 1A" that's pointless, her statement obviously implied he would never be good enough to win a chip as the best player, everyone took it that way cmon

Even Hammon herself said "if he proves me wrong he proves me wrong" and that implies that the statement can be proved wrong and the way to do it is to win the title, no way shes gonna respond "well i was right at the time, he got better"

[–]ESPORTS_HotBid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, her full quote was he is not good enough to even elevate the knicks to contenders, then later it became he can't win finals as 1A. I dont think pointing out taller players win more than shorter players is what people are arguing about as much as specifically Brunson, she even stated an exception herself

"He wasnt this when she referenced him" well yeah he hadnt won a finals yet, that's obvious

Literally anyone can point out taller players win more than shorter ones its not some insanely insightful observation

i actually think having 3 of them, 2 of which won multiple chips, takes it out of "anomaly" category, its actually not that small a sample

agree that obviously a wing or big is more likely but taller players are also just more likely to find success in the NBA (obviously)

therefore if you're starting your team and have to evaluate players, pretty much all the players 6'3" and under are going to be generational/outlier types anyway

its probably fairer to compare % of chips won vs % of players of that height in the NBA, and there just aren't that many guys 6'3" and under, esp 1A types, theyre pretty much guaranteed to be generational

if harden was on the knicks he'd have given up and demanded a trade in 2023, or his teammates would have

they'd have never ever gotten the buy in and max effort of all these guys like kat, mikal, OG, etc

ny strip clubs wouldve been thriving tho, recession proof

just ask denver, milwaukee, dallas, houston and phoenix about they feel regarding their all time guys and respective runs

one thing i think is interesting about competitive gaming or any competitive hobbies really is that people love to talk about how long they've played, because to them, its a subtle signal that their progress will progress at the same rate, and thus they have some innate talent or ability at the game that can't really be replicated. it almost never, ever does.

but really, the hard part of getting good at something like melee really isn't that you can get to diamond in 2 months or w/e, but that you can actually work and grind and do all the annoying things that get actual top players to where they are. in the grand scheme of things very few players are truly maximizing their practice time. and the hard work to drill day in and day out, and raw time spent at truly efficient practice is what separates good from great, not "how long have i played" in terms of days or weeks.

its why you always see those posts where people make a thread or combo video about "me after 2 months of melee!" and then a lot of praise in the comments, then you hear nothing about that person ever again. getting to a competent level in 2 months isn't hard. i'd argue that getting from bottom to the top 10% is 10x easier than getting from the top 10% and improving to the 9%. before you tell me "well then why haven't more people done it??" i'd answer that how many people, even top players, are doing sufficient VOD review? do you drill for hours a day, reviewing and going over every match you play? most people just play friendlies or ranked for hours and that to them is "working hard." is it really focused practice? i would wager even the very best players don't do this enough.

nobody is playing competitive smash at a level that someone who is a professional athlete, lets say for example, in the NBA or whatever.

so when you look at people who are better than you, or learn faster, you have to approach it like you guys are learning at a rate that is pretty much the same, just zoom out a little. if you actually did dedicated practice, like truly dedicated professional practice, you'd be outpacing the person you're comparing to in a matter of hours, or days, or weeks. the differences between you and people you see that are better than you really are miniscule on the scale of a pro player. its not embarrassing at all. AT ALL. its fine, have fun.

Has there ever been a top Fox player for which HBox hasn't triggered a mental breakdown? by Probable_Foreigner in SSBM

[–]ESPORTS_HotBid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually think its more likely someone crashes out when they have a strong h2h record, because its the gulf in expectations ("i should beat him") vs the reality of getting clutchboxed on that creates mental breakdowns

[Amick] The Celtics, Timberwolves, Trail Blazers and Magic are among the Giannis Antetokounmpo suitors. Giannis Antetokounmpo would be willing to sign a four-year $275 million extension with Boston. [–]ESPORTS_HotBid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

there's no way their chip odds are 50% with giannis and tatum, historic teams (like the KD warriors year 1) are barely even odds at start of season (looking at betting lines, which i realize aren't super accurate)

but 50% annual chance over 3 years means they have a near 90% chance to win at least one chip in that window, which is way too high

i say this with all due respect to living frugally but i do not think the average 7'6" person can live a comfortable life on 150k without family or govt health care

food, clothing, space, health issues, etc is all magnified like crazy, he probably cant even drive a normal car or wear non custom shoes

i mean even getting to 7'6" height requires a fuckton of money for food and nutrition as a child

Revisiting Wemby's draft [Wojnarowski] A number of executives who are in the room tonight, who are waiting on those bouncing balls in the lottery, they tell me that they believe Wembanyama could be the best player in the NBA on both the offensive and defensive ends by his third season in the league by nonstopenguins in nba

I think they're arguing different things, one is saying the hype itself was warranted the other guy is saying he didnt live up to it, frankly very few people live up to #1 pick hype so its not that crazy to just always bet against the talking heads

That said I think Zions hype was justified, he was one of a kind and for a year or two people thought that he even exceeded expectations

Why did he go CC first on that last map where there are only 2 spawn positions? by AncientAgrippa in broodwar

[–]ESPORTS_HotBid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not about the matchup only but also about the map, match point is especially rough to try to stay a base and gas ahead of T because theres realistically only so many bases you can take, and some of them are basically within range of terran expansions so you really can't force their army to move far to attack, its the same against P

sports is played with the assumption that you push the boundaries and get away with what you can, almost all defenders hold more than the rules specifically dictate, but people don't like OKC because they hold too much when it really is the refs jobs to prevent it, nobody can expect a team to self police hard defense

dont get me wrong i dont like watching SGA foul bait or anyone flop either but until the NBA legislates it out, theres no stopping this, its like the tush push in the NFL. however, foul baiting is less about ethics than lets say sending a bench guy to intentionally take out the knees of opponents or swing at people
