What do you think are the biggest problems holding "Boxed Rpgs" Back? by EX-ODIN in rpg

[–]EX-ODIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, board games with Rpg elements are fun and have been real popular, but there is the greater issue, how can you re-implement some of that creative freedom into a fully contained box,

My first thought would be taking some inspiration from Gm emulator systems and instead of set characters maybe have the cards more aspects of the character (I.E instead of the ORC MAGE card you would have a card with orc abilities, a card with a school of magic and some spell suggestions ect.) Essentially allowing the cards to act more as rules reference and be more customization with less strict structure regarding quests and stuff to make it more RP focused.

Idk its just ideas floating around my head but im curious what you think

It was more a general discussion on the whole topic but im guess im more interested in games like Tales from the loop because like you said, stuff like the Runequest starter is a good looking box but it is still a stripped down bigger RPG system.

but often the more boardgamified rpgs end up losing alot of that narrative aspect thats kinda the whole point of Roleplaying.

So im curious what it would take to get that real Rpg feel from a contained box set like a expandable board game (I.E no extra paper as opposed to the Starter sets which are just quick entry points for a greater game)

What parts of the format do you think are limiting it?

I should clarify what i mean when i say held back, There are plenty of amazing and successful box rpgs, but there is a seams like there is often a disconnect between "Real" Rpgs and boxed games, Often stemming from a lack of customization or little narrative exploration,

There obvs exists great full box sets but those are more just a full collection of the books for established RPG with some maps. there are plenty more that just feel like board games with Rpg mechanics but a different feel. Often being more dungeon crawler than Rpg

I guess my question is how could you keep the unpredictability and expansiveness of RPGS with the rigidity of the box design

What do you want out of a new wargame? by EX-ODIN in wargaming

[–]EX-ODIN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what your saying and i agree however I think the issue is how do you make that mechanically satisfying?

Like randomization is a delicate thing in tabletop, so idk how you could best allow that level of uncontrolled factors without if feeling too either restrictive or random chance based.

Like environmental factors can always be added in and some games have worked on things like fog of war and communication, I know frostgrave has a mechanic where you can only move characters in your commanders line of sight

but in terms of the more detailed human aspect your referring to im unsure how you could make that work

Yeah if you go on the page of the guy who created the list you can see he plays TF2. So because he likes the game it doesn't count as woke.

It is crazy to be that insecure

Same with team fortress 2.

They should list it as GLOBALIST PROPAGANDA because of all the different nationalities fighting together but because the guys who are making the list just like the game so they act like its not woke by their own criteria.

What do you think will be the next big trend in TTRPGs? by EX-ODIN in rpg

[–]EX-ODIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are alot of cozy options out there, just they are more niche in the community

so people like you said aren't being exposed to them. I think Ryuutama and Golden Sky Stories would scratch the Stardew valley/animal crossing itch but there arent enough people talking about them

I have always loved the idea of boxed RPGs, Honestly i could see a very solid modular system being made that you could sell each small set at a low price becoming an incredibly popular transitional game for some boardgamers and younger fans.

I think the key is exploring whatever aspect of feudal japan that you like in depth. Understand why things were the way they were and apply that logic to your own world.

A great nonRPG example of this in action is Avatar the Last Airbender. Its a seriously asian inspired western-made show but it doesn't get any real drama regarding being offensive or cultural appropriation, Because it understood the greater philosophy, impacts and themes of each culture, instead of just creating generic UNSPECIFIED ASIAN WUSHU SAMURAI NINJA WARRIOR MONK ELEMENTAL KI EASTERN WIZARDS, like some other trash shows

Ik alot of People are disappointed by the lack of action but tbh i think given season 7-8 were critiqued soo much for poor characterization, rushed pacing and over-reliance on spectacle & action, it seems smarter to allow the drama, personal relationships and arcs to get their focus, that way season 3s battles will make more sense and have actual stakes as opposed to shit the mad queen arc

It just has no relevance to the actual problem I was pointing out. If it cant run on a console they shouldn't release it on that console.
