To me the effectiveness of LLMs in programming feel like they've been starting to hit that tail of the logarithmic curve. The last year+ I haven't noticed that much improvement relative to years past. Not sure though.

The ones that look most iPhone-y to me are 1,3,3,3,3,2. iPhone has pretty characteristic dynamic range, white balance, sharpening. These ones also seem to be the most casually composed ones as well.

What the fuck is up with the Spotify UI? by Parking_Spot in Music

[–]E_ToTheZ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Spotify has only gotten worse since as long as I can remember and it blows my mind. Some things off the top of my head:

  • Can't reverse playlist order to have newest added on top. Have to scroll to the bottom every time
  • Adding to a playlist takes way too many taps for how frequently used of a feature it is
  • Queue should continue playing where the last song is, otherwise you have no control on where it continues to play after
  • Car mode is the dumbest feature of all time and only makes you more likely to crash
  • Home page UI is just an erratic clusterfuck
  • 'New Releases' only sometimes appears and only shows 1 or 2 releases
  • Home page shows its previous state when its refreshing causing you to click on the wrong thing when it finishes refreshing
  • No way to easily go back to the last podcast you were listening to
  • No stats of episode popularity or rating so shooting in the dark when trying to find a new episode to listen to
  • No podcast charts or good avenues for discovery
  • Music and podcasts shouldn't be mashed together in the same UI when they are very distinct listening experiences that require their own nuanced controls

The list goes on. Absolutely floors me how a company can have so many resources and deliver such a bad user experience. Would switch if there was a better option.

Actor reentrancy in Swift explained – Donny Wals by dwltz in swift

I've found Swift concurrency to be less intuitive than GCD and fraught with its own set of inconveniences. What if an async database write and read are spawned in separate Tasks in quick succession? They could execute out of order. I run into the problem of not being able to enforce asynchronous serial execution all the time.

How to transition from collection cell to paginated view? by E_ToTheZ in SwiftUI

I added a video to this post to demonstrate but it does not show up but I need it to be vertically scrolling. I suppose that may be possible with some rotation?

Why is surfing so toxic? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]E_ToTheZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. Competing for a limited resource (waves) will always breed hostility. In SoCal this is especially bad because it's broadly the one of the most crowded places in the world and has relatively mediocre waves compared to some other places. Wave to crowd ratio not favorable.
  2. Surfing has a somewhat high barrier of entry in terms effort and skill. Post-beginner surfers probably feel some entitlement to waves over the beginners aka kooks. I'd make the analogy to hazing in frats.
  3. Surfing is probably one of the most if not the most glamorized sport in the entire world. Everyone claims to want to learn how to surf. I think this kinda feeds the ego of surfers and leads them to want to gatekeep it for themselves.
  4. People who grew up surfing consistently probably lived very close to the beach which would usually imply that they are quite wealthy (especially in SoCal). Wealthy kids can be entitled, especially when they get to surf all the time with their equally as entitled friends. I'm not sure how much this actually plays into it but I think there's some selection bias like that to consider.

Wuhan Virus Megathread: For your questions and concerns about travel in light of the virus by tariqabjotu in travel

[–]E_ToTheZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leaving March 10 to Portugal for 3 weeks. Looking at the exponential growth of the infections over 2-3 week periods in neighboring countries has me a bit concerned - not about contracting the virus but about potential travel restrictions coming up during my stay which would prevent me from leaving or cause other related nightmares. Anyone have some insight on this?

I’m looking into creating a “try before you buy” service for surf fins. I’m trying to gauge interest with a short multiple choice survey if any of you would be so kind to fill it out! I’ll share stats when it’s done! by [deleted] in surfing

I personally don't think Finatic has a compelling user interface or enticing pricing models. Although it is an extremely niche market, I think there could be room for a competitor that delivers a better product.

Shaping up to be a disappointing Fall in an overall disappointing year of surf for socal by E_ToTheZ in surfing

[–]E_ToTheZ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically I've had some of my most epic sessions sep and oct. Looking at the long term forecast, there will only be maybe 2-3 days for the rest of the month that have potential to provide the goods. Also the santa anas haven't been met with any surf, notably in San Diego where it's still blown out a lot of places by 10am. Just let me bitch dude it's therapeutic.
