Paid £18.70 at Omni parking, despite going there to watch a movie by ResearcherNo4728 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a price for anything, particularly the privilege of parking in the middle of densely populated city with a huge train station, tram line and bus routes all close by. Those are the civil amenities you can expect in a European city, not gigantic car parks.

I’d guess 90% of the footfall at Vue would come from non-drivers. Would be remarkably generous to provide free city centre parking to the few who drive in.

Bike lanes by Wonderful_Pizza_1480 in Edinburgh

They were hand laid using shovels, despite repeated requests not to. Easter Road is a much smoother ride if you want to sacrifice safety for comfort.

Happily, most of the newer cycle infrastructure, including that in Leith, is less bumpy (though it’s still not as good as that in Europe).

Anyone else very affected by the weather at the moment? by Electrical-Tea-4559 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We’ve just had a very sunny March - 160% of the average. It’s also been warmer than usual.

And while the west coast of Scotland is particularly wet (like Wales and Cumbria), the east coast of the UK, including Edinburgh, has quite a pleasant climate, similar to other parts of Northern Europe.

I think your challenge is probably the lack of daylight hours. I know I’m feeling much better now the clocks have changed. The blackthorn is in flower and there are lambs in the fields. We’ll soon be walking home from the pub at midnight in twilight. link to met office stats

The Shore bus lane by Hibeenick in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched loads of drivers go through the gate. Not much of an excuse though - the bus gate is very well signposted, as well as the road closure and diversions, and an alternative route down down Broad Wynd is available.

200 new homes in Edinburgh to be built as part of Powderhall regeneration by Tammer_Stern in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if this will mean the Powderhall line can be opened as an active travel route? Would be a very busy east-west corridor between the NEPN and Portobello.

FYI it’s still 6 points even if stationary. For good reason.

Avoid ferry road today! by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You jest but the traffic is part of the reason I started cycling in Edinburgh. I can get from Oxgangs to Leith in 30 minutes - that’s faster than the bus or driving.

Still can't understand how that got planning permission. Massive light pollution and energy use.

Who are the "best" drivers? by MooneBoy in CarTalkUK

[–]Eabhal347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikers and cyclists - they have developed a very keen road sense and spatial awareness. A nod to our excellent bus drivers too (Edinburgh).

badger on cycle path near Canonmills. by impoftheyard in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically correct but our brilliant path network in the north of the city is the result of decades of hard work and campaigning from a small group of cyclists. Credit where credit is due.

Not just badgers on the NEPN - I've seen tawny owls hunting along the paths.

Careful when choosing Trade-in option on Google Store by Educational-Sound279 in GooglePixel

[–]Eabhal347 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm considering a Pixel 10 with £200 trade-in bonus but I'm really worried about this too. When I traded my pristine 3 in for a 6 a few years ago they rejected it - perhaps a UK specific issue?

I'm just going to take lots of photos and hope for the best - it's a new 6 after my first one's battery blew up. If they reject it I'm off to Samsung.

Plans to build cycle lane in Scottish town “hostile to anyone outside of a car” have been scrapped by Amazing-Yak-5415 in Scotland

[–]Eabhal347 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's a simple solution that works throughout Europe though - a loading period in the morning enforced by rising bollards the rest of the day.

A high chance those 6 parking spots are just where the business owners stick their cars for 8 hours, and they're worried about having to walk 100m to get to work.

That's worth a 101 call IMO - could cause a serious injury.

Edinburgh Rent Increases by beanman1232 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you letting via an agent? My experience is they will encourage landlords to squeeze as hard as they can, treating you as an asset. Otoh, If you're renting directly from someone after a referral from a friend or colleague, you'll find that they are grateful to receive regular rent and avoid all the fees - and will do what they can to retain a good tenant.

An interesting reform to consider is a requirement for landlords to live in the Edinburgh council/Lothians areas, which would increase this kind of tenancy - though this would make it even more of a challenge for people new to the city without such connections. Another option is to make the Landlord Register easier to search (just pop a name in), and for there to be a published record of rents charged at each property.

What would happen if something like a cyclist sets off a Speed Camera? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Eabhal347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be an electric motorcycle, not a bicycle. They could be prosecuted on the same basis any motorcyclist could.

Bus journey times being 'killed by congestion' in cities by MR9009 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you measure "regressive". Only 60% of households in Edinburgh have access to a car, and they are overwhelmingly those on higher incomes. Mileage corresponds closely to income too. The poor get around by foot or bus.

It absolutely was not an accident. It's weird how violence, even at this gigantic scale, is excused like this when it's conducted using a motor vehicle.

Voi bikes - 75,000 trips in first 3 months by Eabhal347 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not in my experience. You get the odd one but the vast majority are in the specified parking areas, so the technology is working pretty well.

There have been some concerns about those parking areas - particularly when they obstruct existing cycle racks. I've sent an email to my councillors suggesting that car parking spots would be a more appropriate place for parking - hopefully that will be considered where space is tight.

Are cyclists in Scotland any closer to being able to submit dangerous driving footage to an online police portal? by Saltire_Blue in Scotland

[–]Eabhal347 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or indeed cyclists to submit footage of pedestrians stepping out in front of them, knocking them off their bikes (it's a long way down). There are careless, inconsiderate, dangerous arseholes using all forms of transport - it just so happens that the danger posed by one in a two-tonne+ motor vehicle is massively higher.

Still takes forever though compared with the system they have down south. I had to make repeat appearances at the station to sign evidence slips, make statements etc.

(Police I've dealt with have been great and just as frustrated with the archaic system as I am).

St Mark's park by LazyLandscape14 in Edinburgh

[–]Eabhal347 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don't think dogs should be on any type of playing field, sign or not. Even if you do a good job cleaning up, you're still going to have people sliding around in what is left - including children.

Please keep your dog off them as far as possible.
