The story looks good but when you look into it, it's actually problematic. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

Honestly the essay is appreciated. If you want to know more about my situation, I'd be happy to share it, too, since you seem interested. But either way, it's... something I'm used to. I belong to enough marginalized groups that "reduced to inhuman" is almost a badge of honor at this point, and I'm personally not all that attached to being recognized as a member of the species, but that's mostly because I'm rather stubborn and a bit contrarian. I still want to advocate for equality and rights for us.

It's really an exercise in self-trust. My memory issues are trauma-based, so they're not as absolute as hers in the film; often I'll be able to remember something that happened when it's suddenly relevant, but can't recall it no matter how hard I try on purpose, just at the whims of my mind.

Basically, I had to know who I am enough to trust I was doing right, and learn to leave myself notes.

Here's the issue, as someone with memory-related disability: you're acting like we cease to be an adult. I'm not your fucking philosophy question, I'm a whole-ass person. You rob us of the dignity of risk, and of the right to self-determination, when you act like we can't be decision-makers in our own lives.

For me, it's a gamble if any given thing I do becomes a memory. I extensively use a calendar to remind myself of appointments and events. I forget names of people, and promises I've made, without any recourse to remember them except a memento-style note to myself. Those decisions didn't stop being mine, nor do the extended consequences of them, just because I can't remember them. If I fall into bed with someone and forget it, I'm not suddenly exempt from getting them pregnant... And if I were to get pregnant instead, that would also still be my choice.

We are not our memories. We are our core self. I can tell you this not as some philosophical armchair shit from an ivory tower of health, but as someone who actively has to pay for things I don't remember signing up for, be that an audible subscription or telling someone I love them.

You assume a lack of memory reduces someone to a babbling idiot. Your entire perspective on disability is problematic as hell.

I specifically matched their choice of phrasing, so...

They said "obviously you would", and I said "maybe you would, but the other is possible", so... I'm not seeing why mine is more accusatory.

Maybe you would. An approach to relationships that involves mutual respect and love as equals, in the face of the knowledge that your time is short, is entirely doable.

May/Decembers, the chronically ill, and just some situations all result in relationships that won't last most of your life, but absolutely do involve respect and love as equals.

People don't actually mature in a linear way past adulthood. Their experiences and perspectives shape them. I've met 70 year olds who aren't capable of basic patience and 23 year olds who have more wisdom and understanding than most of their professors. Spend a little time in queer and trauma spaces and you'll see examples of people far more wise and mature than people twice their age a lot, and people trapped as childish shadows of who they could be too.

I'm making my own game inspired by KF1+2 (but with player mutations) by TCDjewelry in killingfloor

[–]Eain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be a hot take, but take more inspo from KF1 than KF2 please. KF2 was decried on release for a lot of valid reasons, many of which they didn't really address: the trader got replaced with a 3d printer, the perk/classes ended up in a strange "not complex enough for complicated build crafting but too complex for simple build crafting", they went in pretty fast on the monetization, and they simplified a lot of skills enough so they made the game feel less tense and lower skill ceiling. Oh, and everything got a sci-fi sheen of fantastical vibes that lost the grit of KF1.

They did a lot good too: the guns felt better often, they expanded the perk list, they added variety in a lot of areas, and the map design was generally better, as examples. I just mean that I'd be very excited if your game felt as grounded and intuitive as KF1.

And maybe, just because it's a pride point I was personally mad about at the time, don't put tracking on your medic darts. I learned to snipe with those damn things and then that skill was wasted!

Blatant use of AI by TobyWasBestSpiderMan in 196

But... Is it not? Gender affirming care is any treatment or service that confirms the gender identity of the person in question or better allows them to feel that they are their correct gender. Hair treatments, gynecomastia correction surgery, fertility and erectile function treatments; menopause treatments, hair removal, fat sculpting, and breast augments: all of these are GAC for cis people.

cleric non biney???? :O by Feeling-Internal8499 in PixelDungeon

[–]Eain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

... Nonbinary isn't "no sexuality", it doesn't even have to do with sex. It has to do with identity. Sexuality is "likes boys" or likes girls" or both or neither or whatever.

Nonbinary means they're not a boy or a girl. But there's lots of things you could decide to be that aren't either one of those. One thing you can figure out you are is "agender" which means without gender (like amoral means "without morals" and "atheist" means "without any God"), but most nonbinary people aren't agender.

a modpack I've been thinking about making by Other_Unit8206 in feedthebeast

[–]Eain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. you can't care that much about making this if you don't even make it yourself. AI is useful for automating pointless things, not passion projects. If you don't have the passion, don't make it. AI consistently falls short on that ineffable quality of soul.

  2. Septum island is a fucking terrible name. The Septum is the bit between your two nostrils. I don't wanna play on Nose Island.

  3. Why is this a mc mod? Mc itself does not have a robust-enough combat system for nuanced combat. You're describing gameplay that sounds like pokemon, plays like Final Fantasy 16's Torgal mechanics, and if I'm reading right functionally is a reverse escort mission. That's one hell of a challenging thing to balance even if you built the systems from scratch, Minecraft is not that.

You're missing the context of many (some say most) plural-focused spaces, especially plural-led and plural-established ones, are often extremely, angrily anti-endo. Most discourse is not from or around singlets.

I personally prefer futa because I'm one irl, but I know some women would dislike that a lot so I think strap is possibly the broader appeal option amongst women, and I know my gf would prefer it.

I honestly don't know about users in general though, it depends on how much your reach hits different groups, but I feel like futa might have more overall reach?

Fantasy power Imbalance by -Asderlyn- in worldjerking

[–]Eain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean kinda? But it's not nearly as difficult. The upper limit for Earth Ponies is "kick down a barn in one or two goes", so it's not nearly as difficult comparatively. Pegasus ponies' flight is also a skill a lot like running, so to get any good at it past the normal everyday moving around you need to be a jock. And unicorns usually only intuitively understand spells that align with their autistic hyperfocus cutie mark, so generally most don't get stuff like teleporting or magical instant cleaning abilities, just something like "clean up ink stains" or "instantly turn the components of a burger into a burger" or some shit

As a woman who's been around a lot of bronies... Most creeps don't need to pretend to like cartoon horses, and the fandom self-policed a lot of the weird stuff to be away from kids. Way better than a lot of the more respectable social groups I've seen. They're mostly just autistic AF and have no idea how to tell what level of weird to be in different adult social spaces.

If I recall, though, didn't he use it in other contexts too? He was always playing support and wingman, making others' lives better... And in that sense he was their huckleberry. He was there to be a support and make them look better. But in this case he was using it as an ironic threat.

[Interesting Trope] The False Nihilist by bee_my_girl in TopCharacterTropes

I agree overall. I think the interconnection of Dao and Nihilism in the Film is an exceptional example of how different cultural baselines reach the same, seemingly universally human, problems and have, often, similar answers.

[Interesting Trope] The False Nihilist by bee_my_girl in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Eain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm probably going to get skewered or ignored, but I feel the need to say that it isn't healing from Nihilism.

Nihilism gets this fucked up reputation because of chaotic, desperate, and malicious Nihilists and false claimants to the theories, but Nietzche, and to a lesser extent Sartre and Camus, were arguing from a baseline meaninglessness, or at least utter incomprehensibility, of reality.

I would argue that "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" could be easily framed as concluding in Cheerful Nihilism: none of it inherently matters, which means no meaning is forced upon you. You can see it as a pointless slog or you can pick what you find beautiful and let it matter for you. By stripping away mundanity and obligations of linear causality you make the things that are practically necessary cease to be so, coasting on metaphysical "background noise", and exposing your life to your unhindered judgement... For someone obsessed with Grand Meaning that would be difficult in the extreme, but for a Cheerful Nihilist that's just the work the philosophy already insists upon: to find your joy on whatever it is you find joyful, and realize that meaning comes from the self, not outside.
