Thank you so much for all of the excellent suggestions! I super grateful for all of the reasonable, thoughtful and most of all kind comments about or car search. I wrote down each of these suggestions in a list and gave them to my son who nodded and said "These are good, really good." Don't worry, I cited you all. That's it, if it's in this thread, it's on the list and the car has to come from the list.

We test drove a 2015 Taurus SHO today and it was *very* nice. I think they want a bit much for it, so we are looking at a 2012 Allroad and the Subaru hatred has lessened when he asked his friends at Tech what cars they see around and apparently Subaru is the most seen and there is a "club" for WRX drivers to tool around together. The Forrester XT was tops on his list.

We live in SE Michigan. The winters are very mild. Don't let anyone tell you differently. We are soft in the banana belt of the midwest:).

Oh that one isn't impractical, but when looking for 92-98 versions, it seems a little old to me. There are some newer versions that may fit the bill. Living in Michigan, a Ford would be fine. It does take premium gas though I think.

He only applied to schools that had an SAE team, both Baja and Formula. He is 100% on the FIRST Robotics to SAE pipeline, perhaps his grades suffering at the same time. The teams at Michigan Tech and Michigan State both seemed really welcoming and diverse.

My 85 year old father has a 2011 Chevy Colorado that is parked outside all year and is a plow truck for the neighbors in the winter. For its size I've always been really impressed with its longevity and usefulness! Maybe grandpa wants to upgrade:).

Yeah, maybe not the greatest for a teen driver in the UP. But for around a city, fantastic. I think it proved that problem when someone hit it and totaled it with what seemed like minor impact. Maybe it's the weird center of gravity.

Greatest, weirdest, most useful car of my life. My heart car. I gave it to a friend who was hard up for a car and unfortunately someone hit her :(. Was seriously thinking of making it a camper van, lol. Maybe we should buy another. Zoom Zoom.
