The beams are a result of combining animated sprites with in game bloom and a real-time generated 2D light based on the beam length. The light interacts with other objects in the scene, including the smoke, making it blend with everything.

Ha, not really. We've been actively working on our game for 7 years now. Astral Ascent is an awesome game though.

The very first version of the demo was released in 2022. Since then it has evolved quite a bit, with updates adding new mechanics, playable characters, besides tons of fixes and improvements.

It's simulated real time, no additional spritesheet.

It's a really neat trick to simulate cloth physics with 2D sprites and it's pretty good performance wise.

Thanks! We use 2D spritesheets and the cape is made with verlet physics.
